Show Editorials Strength in Letter to editor In defense of A.S.W.C. President: self-relian- ce or in Dear editor, Since Phil Takis letter to the editor appeared, we have been in conversation about the allegations he presented against the A.S.W.C. President, Tonya Garrcaud. Mr. Takis questioned what exactly Ms. Garreaud is doing, and if she thought the college is running smoothly without any unpleased members. Apparently Mr. Takis has failed to see what she does, and what it is she is supposed to do. According to the A.S.W.C. constitution, the presidents job is to call and chair all Senate meetings, create any necessary committees, oversee the A.S .W.C. Office every week and to cast the vote on Senate issues. We would like to know, Mr. Takis, what constitution you were referring to. Were you referring to the old A.S.W.C. constitution from two years ago that is dead and has been buried? Mr. Takis, have you ever Ms. Garreaud? We all have, and spoken conversations with her, we . our through happen to know that according to her job description, she is doing a fine job. Mr. Takis, exactly how do you weigh the environmental impact of an amphitheater, parking, fossil fuels, nuclear energy, diaper in land fills, the deterioration of the ozone, and radon emissions? In essence, how do you weigh one environmental issue over another? Can Westminster CQllege outweigh the loss of the unused amphitheater and possible deterioration of the creek stuover the impact that dents would have on the environmental problems? We believe that the administration has thought about where the new library should be built. We also have faith that the administration is taking these issues into account and are educated enough to look at these issues seriously. What administration wants to destroy their campus? In regard to the second issue concerning the A.S .W.C. Office itself, one out of three isnt bad. Mr. Takis, is it so bad to be able to listen to some good music somewhere on campus (other than the jukebox that skips and costs money)? We have never seen anyone shoot some hoops in the office. Mr. Takis, are you thinking back to some other A.S.W.C. administration, because we havent even found aball in there. And this supposed party planning that goes on, all we have heard concerning parties are the A.S .W.C.-sponsoractivities. Where do you hear about these parties, Mr. Takis? In order for us to respond to Mr. Takis questioning of Ms. Garreauds respect for her position, we must know your defini by Liz Peterson Forum editor It seems were made to believe that we must be strong, people to count for anything in our There arc era of those who appear to pull it off, too. I wonder if they really mean it. Some people dont appear to depend on anyone, and seem to pull all of their strength from themselves. How can they really feel so wise that they dont need to rely on anyone, ever? We mock our peers who blatantly depend on pthers; We believe that it is a terrible thing to need someself-awarene- nt ss. one. Maybe it is terrible to use others in order to avoid taking care of ourselves, but isnt it sometimes necessary to look outside of ourselves for direction? Is it wrong to wish to turn to someone when you feel overwhelmed? Is it sick to sometimes seek security outside of yourself? Die re are certain situations where we must turn to others in order to complete a job or to gain understanding. Im wondering if it is wrong to also turn to others for well-educat- emotional support. Surely it is significant that the friendships we generally hold most dearly arc those that existed while we were young. When we were young we didnt need to convince; ourselves that we needed to be strong and independent in order to be significant. Well, we couldnt be; we were young. But do you remember;; what it felt like to have a best friend who knew everything, with whom you didnt feel you had to censor i anything (and you probably couldnt get away with it if you tried)? Can we remain independent and significant if we occasionally turn to others? I find that I prove my strength to myself now by only allowing people to play certain roles and by setting control limits in ed ger person? Dear Forum editor, I read Lucille Smiths letter in the Jan. 26 edition of the Forum. I have never met Ms. Smith so I would appreciate it if you would pass a message on to her through the Forum. One might think I was choosing to inflict psychoticbehaviors on society rather than what I deem as a noble and fulfilling profession. And what is this vocation that polarizes me from others; opinions? In simple terms: a teacher. When I was little, playing teacher to my classroom of stuffed animals was my favorite pastime; Even on excursions to my grandparents home I continued the charade by pretending I was taking my class on field trips. At this point, everyone thought I was cute. But as I got older, the cuteness faded as I was quescounselors and tioned by family members as I prepared my secondary curriculum. We have gravitated toward Ms. Garreaud as an individual, not because of her position, but because she is a fellow student who is concerned with the issues we have presented to her. We entirely agree with you, Mr. Takis, in that you fail to see, as you said at the beginning of your letter, that Ms. Garreaud is a liaison between the students and the administration. You are right, Mr. Takis, you fail to see what it is that Ms. Garreaud does; this has led you to believe that she doesnt do anything and doesnt care. We, as interested and concerned members of the Westminster community, know you are wrong on this point as well.
