You are late for an exam because your car would not start. You are stranded in a bad part of town because your tire is flat How grand itis when youfinally reach school from your daily commute, only to find no parking spaces. You sit in your car, waiting for a space, like a vulture stalking its prey. After class, your car is a sanctuary that rescues you from the hectic college life. Our cars play an important part in our routine and, equally, have a mind of their own. Every car, old or new, has a story. We see and recognize Westminster cars, but do we really know them? I would like to introduce a series of articles on Westminster cars and their personalities. Wouldntyou like to know nessee. Angus describes his car as incredibly messy. He said his car enjoys all the junk because it makes her feel used. Her passenger side is cluttered with garbage, maps, atlases and books for easy access. Angus said he also keeps a shovel in the front seat to dig his car out of the snow and to make appropriate threatening gestures. He said Gray Sluts back seat is congested with blankets, newspapers, magazines, underwear and various lost assignments. Her trunk has tools, alcohol (in case of a breakdown), sleeping bags, various lubricants, canned food, bottled water, and an 80 lb. bag of cement to weight her down. e, Gray Slut is accessorized with pot coalition, and I Love Jesus stickers. Angus said her fragrance is a subtle pine scent from numerous hanging air fresheners. Her gas taste is expensive, he said, she guzzles supreme. Gray Sluts psychological state has been diagnosed as faulty brakes, malfunctioning clutch and dysfunctional transmission in first and third gear. The underneath is held up by bailing wire and is near to breakdown. Angus said his car is a compulsive liar and a tease. My friends are scared of her, because she does what she wants to do, he said. On one occasion, he. said, Gray Slut rear ended a Pontiac Grand Prix going 40 mph. It was at this time Angus realized she had a death wish. She is constantly suicidal, he exclaimed. Thebrakes dont work. pro-choic- the engine dies, she will swerve to one side, all without warning. She definitely believes in S & M driving. On top of that, shes very picky about the cars she runs into, theyre always new and expensive. I think its because shes jealous. Angus said, one time on their way to Virginia, Gray Slut and he were stopped in Salina, Kan. due to a broken ring on her piston. She was rushed to Bobs Mechanics for immediate repair at the cost of $1,500. Meanwhile, he said, I grabbed a bite to eat at a local restaurant and got a ride back in a 4x4. Gray Slut saw this and became inmiles out of sanely jealous. Twenty-fiv- e town she decided to jettison the oil pump, another $180. After that, Angus apologized to her profusely. Gray Sluts favorite spot of commuting is north of the 1 300 E. and 2 1 00 S. intersec tion at the infamous merge lane. Due to stubbornness, Angus said, Gray Slut rear ends the car in front of her to prevent any butt-in- s. Angus, of course, is obliged to give the finger on her behalf. Although Gray Slut is extremely temperamental, finicky and obsessive, she has never rolled. Angus said its because she likes to be on top of things. However, she did go into a ditch one time, which Angus blames on a momentary lapse of concentration on her part. She has no patience, Angus said. Her front license plate is bent under the bumper from misplaced pedestrians and geriatrics. Although my car is a persistent, temperamental liar, I still respect her in the morning, Angus said. Resident advisors: Its more then just a job, its an adventure t by Judy Conner Forum staff writer Three to five Hogle Hall Resident Advisor (R.A.) positions are open for the 1993-9- 4 academic year. Applications for these positions are available in the Campus Life Office and will be due on Friday, Feb. 5 at 5 p.m. R.A.S receive free room and board for the school year. Resident advisors are a part of resident hall life on nearly every campus. They act as a liaison between the administration of the college and the dorm students. There are advantages and disadvantages to being an R.A. but above everything else, an R.A. must be a people person. R. A.s have many responsibilities. They relay information to the dorm students about campus activities and rules and are responsible for rule enforcement. They , counselors by being also act as first-lin- e available to students for advice. Generally, R.A.S try to provide a sense of community to the dorms. Officially, the residence hall is provided as a place to study and rest in, according to Campus Life Director Nick McClure. R.A.S must know that, to some extent, they may be viewed as the bad guy when they tell a group of friends to keep the noise down in the evening. McClure said that there hasnt been much of a problem in this area. Things have been running pretty smoothly; the noise has been about the worst problem, he said. McClure said that he feels the current R. A.s are frank, fair and honest with him and the students. He also said that individuals are encouraged to talk about whats on their minds. R.A.s are students but also have an additional job, he said, which establishes a good connection with the dorm students, because they face the same problems and need the same guidance. As the direct link to the students, the R.A.s attend a weekly meeting with the campus life director to discuss and ask questions. They also hold a meeting at the beginning of the year for hall students and arrange additional meetings as needed. They set up educational and recreational programs. Past events include having Planned Parenthood come to talk to the students and gathering a group of people to go sledding. Leticia Rubio, sophomore in accounting, applied for the R. During the rounds, the applicant will be asked randomly chosen questions that deal with difficult situations they might have to face as an R.A. The committee really tries to get to know what type of person you are so they will know how you ll handle the situation, Rubio said. February 2, 1993 R.A.S have the opportunity to display and develop leadership skills. Students also have a chance to be involved anc! affect the campus. McClure was an R,A. in college and said he found it very rewarding. A timeline of events and due dates is attached to the application form for ar.y students interested in applying. Jorum Page 5 |
