Show Student Senate Seeks To Build Framework by Lynette Rundell Forum staff writer With the new constitution now in place and a staff of committed senate representatives, ASWC President Matt Beard wants to build the framework and set the precedence in which all other Senates operate in the future. Beard compared the new Senate to the e. different phases in the Right now were in infancy. We need to build life-cycl- strong parliamentary procedures and establish some basic principles and goals before changing anything. Beard said we have a great Senate now and everyone is pumped up and ready to ft With the commitment and dedication of the Senate, Beard said one of his goals are to build a closer-kn- it faculty and student body. One of the ways in doing this, Beard said, would be to have Senate members meet with their faculty and students periodically to get input and feedback on ideas or problems. He said this would build a better line of communication between them. Beard also said he would like to see more direct student representation within the committees set up by administration. At this time, Beard said, students dont have a voice on certain committees that directly impact us. By the end of this year, Beard said he would like a system which encourages the faculty to make nominations when Senate openings are available. The faculty is in rs in a great position to locate the their classrooms, he said. Beard said he wants people to be proud of Westminster and their Senate. He wants them to be able to see that the Senate really can make things happen. Recent resignations from several Senate members, are just a matter of bad luck, said Beard. Its not as intimidating as the spa. People come to work out, they dont go just to watch other people work out, he said. Its not just for jocks, said Mary Lang, a senior in communications; who began her workout routine when school started. I go at least three times a week for 20 minutes and work out on the climber, she said, after only a month I can see a difference in my thighs, and Im already back into a size 6. The spa is usually crowded and often intimidating, Lang said, If more students knew about the weight room I think more would take advantage of it. Josh Miner, a senior in English, goes to the weight room every day. I lift just to try to keep my size. Whether health conscious or size conscious, students can find something to do in the weight room. Health conscious Westminster students can pump it up at the weight room in the Payne Gymnasium. With the help of the Utah Jazz, the Westminster weight room was upgraded in 1989, said Coach Tom Steineke, and is now fully equipped with various free weights, set weights, a simulated stair climber, as well as several stationary bicycles. The room, located in the basement of the gym, is open to all Westminster students with valid student I.D., Monday through Thursday 12 to 8 p.m. and Friday 12 to 5 p.m. Both mens and womens shower facilities are available. J ust bring a padlock and you can put your stuff in the lockers, said Beverly Shumway , a junior in communications, as she rapidly peddled away on one of the electronic bicycles. I try to workout as often as possible, she said.
