Show Events .r Campus improvements set to take their toll by f l , Anyone wishing to take a casual stroll around the south end of campus this semester may be finding it harder than usual. The construction of the Gore School of Business, the remodel ing of the the boiler plant, and the rebuilding Black Bridge have inconvenienced many, as campus improvements have overtaken . While some find these improvements a burden because of the noise, the limited access to parking, and the extra time it takes to get to some classes, The attitude is generally good," according to Plant Facilities and Operations Director Richard Brockmyer. The last several years weve been able to make significant improvements where we once something which only had money to band-ai- d needed fixing. said Brockmyer. Resigning ASWC Secretary Shawn Mehling gives pointers to newly elected Secretary Roxanne ' Mennes. Mehling leaves; Mennes stays On October 6 and 7 the ASWC held a special election to select a successor to Shawn Mehl ing, ASWC Secretary, who announced his resignation citing personal reasons. Shawn was electd to the position last spring after a somewhat hesitant campaign. Tammy ASWC President) really (Hopkins, 1987-8- 8 wanted me to run, he said, but I wasnt really sure. I would decide to run, then not to before I at the finally agreed to do it. .Voter turn-ou- t elections jvs-nohigh t approximately spring 450 students voted, but, More people VoteS last year than ever, Shawn added. The ASWC is an active organization, with such duties as: funding other tampus clubs, meeting with other colleges and universities to exchange ideas and to promote Westminster College, organizing dances and other student activities, supervising the Shaw Center Board, and working with the Administration. The ASWC Secretary position is also an active job. Shawn had to attend all meetings of the Executive board (consisting of the ASWC President, Chief Justice, Speaker of Assembly, and Mr. Gary Fitzer, Dean of Students), the Administrative Counsel (all club presidents), the Executive Cabinet, the Judiciary Legislative Assembly, the Committee, and the Budget Committee. He was responsible for taking minutes at these meetings and making sure they were distributed to all concerned. He also served as for the ASWC and as. er organizer for the April Arts Festival. When Shawn was elected last spring he was enthusiastic about the job. He lived in Hogle Hall, had no bills to pay and no outside job and had plenty of time for the position. The job requires 10 scheduled office hours, in addition to the meetings, for a total of 20 to 25 hours per week spent on duty. Compensation for the job was approximately $200 a month. Since that and taken a time Shawn has moved e He bills. works 20 his to new part-timjob pay week at that job, spends 8 to 15 to 30 hours per week rehearsing asacatjnerjibej" of fcoiys jer the playnTwefrth Might, ancf is" talcing 16 credit hours this semester. As a result, Shawn says he has very little time for the ASWC position. He was also upset with lack of major projects for the secretary to do. I also kind of felt useless, like I was being paid $200 to take minutes, he added. off-camp- Shawns resignation opened the position for Roxanne Mennes, the winner of the recent election despite the fact that she had to win as a write-i- n candidate. She was disqualified as an original ballot candidate after some of her campaign posters were found within 10 feet of the voting station in Shaw Center, but was allowed to remain in the race a a write-i- n candidate. She went to many classrooms to announce her position as a write-i- n and convinced enough people to vote for her that she won the election. Shawn has' offered his servjj ces to hel p Roxanne make the transition to new Campus improvements fall under many different categories., Many are privately funded, such as the Gore building and the boiler plant. Oren Nelson, a Westminster College trustee who helped to pave the Hogle Hall parking lot last year, felt the old boiler plant next to Hogle Hall was an eyesore, according to Brockmyer, and that it needed attention. The boiler plant will eventually be landscaped, weather permitting. Other maintenance is budgeted under capital improvements, such as the carpeting in the Converse Hall lobby and the painting of various hallways and buildings on campus. . Often, said Brockmyer, some budgeted projects are put on the back burner because other things come up that need more attention. An example of this was the decision to delay painting the outside of Foster Hall and to instead rebuild the Black Bridge and the Place. .. . walkway into Nunemaker ' .; Brockmyer also talke'd about improvements at Hogle Hall. -- Tuesday, Oct. 20 Wednesday, Oct. 21 Thursday,' Oct. 22 Friday, Oct. 23 Saturday, Oct. 24 V by it 1 ' 1 ' I s 4 -- f: 'r - i j Workshop, 5 p.m. Westminster.
