Show Academics Continued from page 1 Forum exclusive with Berenice Bradslhaw wanted her to participate in the town "box social, where young ladies prepared beautiful picnic-typ- e baskets to be auctioned off to the highest bidder, My box was piade out of a ginger-snabarrel, and it was the most beautiful box there, Bradshaw said. There was one particular cowboy, tall and skinny, who was determined to buy mine. He had no idea who made it, but was sure anything that pretty would have a nice young lady attached to share it with. He did win the highest bid. I started to hide, but someone found me. When he found out his eating companion was a shy he was indeed embarassed. Nevertheless, we shared that lunch together, chewing to the tune of others' laughter." p Nevertheless, Bradshaw was reunited with the college in 1983, after hearing about a tragic accident Louis Mertz, an aviations major, was working as an Air Med helicopter pilot. On one such trip, he was going from the University of Utah Hospital to the Primary Childrens Hospital to pick up a child scheduled for surgery. Unfortunately, Mertz never made it there. His helicopter crashed during the nights heavy fog, killing him instantly. Bradshaw was touched by this incident. She wanted to help. six-year-ol- d, Upon contacting the college President, Dr. James Petersen, he was more than happy to accept Bradshaws generous offer of $2,000. The money was used to set up two Louis Mertz Memorial Scholarships, primarily for students majoring in aviation. Bradshaw began high school at Redmond High in Oregon, participating in singing and speech. She then moved back to Salt Lake City with her family and attended East High School. , Later on, at a time when the colleges financial situation was in jeopardy, Bradshaw once again offered to help. This time, an endowment was set up in the amount of $2 million to be used for further scholarship assistance. Most of this money goes toward funding the Bradshaw Faculty Scholarship, traditional and which is given to twenty-fiv- e students. Along with the assistance Bradshaw gives the college, she participates in funding many other institutions as well. Among these are Ballet West, the Utah Opera, Order of the Eastern Star of Utah, and the Unitarian Church. Another major contribution was given to the School of American Ballet in New York City. She established three scholarships in memory of the late George Balanchine, a famous choreographer. I hated it there," she said. "I failed practically everything. I felt like a little toad in a big puddle, she laughed. "I decided to attend Westminster, when it was a high school. I was involved in a number of operas there, and just loved it! she exclaimed. "In 1922, there were only two buildings on campus Converse Hall and Ferry Hall. There was also the boy's dormitory, affectionately known. a3,. the 'potato cellar,. shp added. . al . When asked about the changes in Westminster since her time, she said, After I was married, and left Utah, I more and less lost track of Westminster. When you have a family, many other responsibilities seem to take precedence, and I really hadnt kept in touch. announces fellowship in science by Traveling is Bradshaws greatest love. Franklin was alive, he didnt like to travel, but I did. So I would go without him, When she said. Once in a while, Bradshaw would take friends or family members with her, but for the most part, she liked travelling alone. I can have a good time by myself, and besides, Im not afraid of anything, she said. One particular trip was with a Mormon tour group to South America. I really dont like traveling with those Mormons, she said. All they want to do is get to the hotel and rest, and I want to get out and see the world! she added. On x this same trip, one other gentleman and myself were the only ones who were not LDS. On the way to one scenic spot, our bus broke down, and we were literally stranded in the desert. I decided that this was not going to spoil our trip, so this man and I broke out the beer, and the two of us had a real good time, she laughed. Besides this trip, she has been all over the world. Ive been from pole to pole, and to, x It is the top fellowship that any graduate student in science could ever get, said Physics Professor Chris Johnson in reference to the National Science Foundation Graduate Fellowship sponsored by the National Research Council. Barry Quinn, head of the biology department and a professor of 25 years at Westminster, knows that it is not completely impossible for a Westminster student to receive a NSF fellowship. Quinn points to Richard Wood, a 1977 graduate of Westminster. Wood, a triple science major, applied to four graduate schools and was accepted at all four including MIT. He attended Berkeley to receive his doctorate and Yale for his studies. He is presently involved in cancer research in England. ' Bradshaw reached across the table and said, Youre looking at her! The woman was astounded, and quite embarrassed. Not only does Bradshaw look and feel healthier, but says she probably adds five years to her life everytime she participates in these activities. Her favorite part of the day is in the evening, especially weekend nights, when she and a male companion regularly go out dancing. I love getting all dressed up, make-up- , lace stockings and all, dancing the night away, she said. When asked what her future goals and desires are, she remarked, Im so grateful to the many friends, and loved ones who have supported me throughout the years. My main goal, though, would be to have peace of mind, free from worry. I realize, though, that I may never have that, but I will continue to strive . for it, she concluded. - ILE 3 Hours: 4pm-1a- Sun.-Thur- s. 4pm-2a- Fri. & do r.rios PIZZA DELIVERS for fellowship applicants. p.m. Bielanski is the first speaker of the Sixth Annual Weldon J. When I first went CKO1, DJ In Johnsons opinion, the reason Westminster students dont have much of a chance is due to the competition and the relatively few number, of fellowships available. It is extremely competitive and you are up against the top schools in the country, he said. Kristie G. Sowards This fellowship, intended for students who will be beginning graduate study in science or engineering, offers a $12,300 stipend each year, for a maximum of three years. In addition. NSF will provide practicing institutions with a allowance to cover all tuition costs and assessed fees. Six hundred and five graduate fellowships will be awarded this year for study and research in science or engineering leading to masters or doctoral degrees. According to Johnson any individual who receives this fellowship must demonstrate two things: academic superiorty and creative potential. When asked if there are any students at Westminster that in his estima- tion could receive this fellowship, Johnson said that there were none that he knew of at this time. "They may have a chance, but I would say it would be very slim, he said. Bradshaw led me into the "Rogues Gallery."
