Show news Whos Who Includes 15 Westminsteirites by Myriarn Hernandez v The 1987 edition of Whos Who among students in American universities and colleges will include the names of 15 students from Westminster College who have been selected by the Dean of Students Office as national outstanding leaders. A letter with a nomination form is sent to us every year from the headquarters of Whos Who in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, so we can nomi- nate whoever we think is worthy, said Karen Hendry, administrative assistant to the dean of students. Dean Gary Fitzer then selects a committee of five people from the staff and faculty to revise the list of nominees. Hendry said the students are selected based on their academic achievement, service to the community, leadership in extracurricular activities and potential for continued success. According to Hendry, the students selected join an elite group of students chosen from more than 1 ,500 institutions in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and several foreign nations. Students named this year from Westminster College in alphabetical order are: Katherine D. Ashton MerriLee Barton David M. Bengelsdorf Leslie D. Bennett Denise N. Bullick Michael Callaghan Jean A. Cottrell Margaret K. Elliot William S. Godwin Glen C. Kizzire Michelle M. Maxwell Shirley D. Michel Angela R. Russell Jennifer A. Wyckoff Stephanie L. Young Student Fees Lower, Activities Wont Feel Cuts by Rollin Mitchell Students at Westminster College will be paying less for Associated Students of Westminster College student fees next year. As a result of administration recommendations and a surplus of about $26,000 in the ASWC budget, ASWC has lowered student fees for next year. Dean of Students Gary Fitzer said that since the school has assumed the role of bill collector for ASWC, they also assume authority to review fees. Because of complaints heard from students wanting to know where the money was spent, the administration asked ASWC to review the way the money is serving students. "We responded as an administration to what we heard from students, said Fitzer. He said that a survey conducted by a research methods class suggested that students were not as concerned about paying fees as about where their money was being spent. ASWC Treasurer MerriLee Barton said that there was almost a $26,000 surplus in the ASWC budget last year. Because of the surplus and the shift to more students, the ASWC executive cabinet decided it was time for a cut in fees and redirection of funding. "We hope by reducing fees it will give students a small financial break, considering tuition and other school costs, Barton said. According to Barton, the cuts will not be felt directly in activities, but will be taken out of the surplus they had been receiving. However, because of the redirection of funding, college publications will feel the cuts most and small dances will not receive any funding. According to Barton, the fees will be redirected into a spring formal and activities studirected more toward dents. One of the changes in fees is that downtown students will pay student fees, but the fee structure will be lowered. v non-tradition- al Fitzer said that he felt ASWC has been very responsive to the fee structure and student needs.
