Phone 417-329- 7 Commencement exercises are upon us, and as we send our congratulations to the graduates we are almost certain to think back on our own day of reckoning. For it was at this time that most of us had to decide just where we were going and how easy or difficult it would be for us to get there. In reading the article written by Mrs. Lee, a memoir of her graduation last week I was touched by the sense of loss that she felt as she left her classmates, some of them for the last time. And now, fifty years later, she still remembers it fondly. It seems only natural to me that one remember his school years with good feelings. However, as we all know, there are some who remember that period of their life as a time when pushy teachers and nagging parents dictated their every move. How sad, how sad indeed! The conditions that exist in the world today are bad enough for those who have advantages, let alone for those who have the disadvantage of being the graduates who did not care. The chances of getting a job are oft times slim even for college graduates. In a recent issue of Newsweek Magazine two college graduates were shown with a jack hammer and a shovel in hand, showing the irony that if one gets a good education he will never worry about being a ditch digger. The fact still remains that if one does not endeavor to get a high school diploma he might not be considered for the most manual jobs. Almost every speech that is given at commencements within the next month will warn the graduates of the cold, cruel world that they are about to enter. I prefer to think of it as a world of problems that needs their attention and hop that they can put their good sense and knowledge to use and improve upon it for their children. dm DT'S SAFETY o u I Your Stop In . . . at one of these advertisers and ask for a complete check . . . cooling system, brakes, tires, shocks, etc. It could save you many hours of time while vacationing or driving through the Spring Present ... for your point of view!
