No enough manueverable Vice-preside- Me by Chalmers Hicks Las Vegas is a watering place- that means different things to different persons. An old timer there, once told me that Las Vegas was a place where a man could do anything he wanted if he was Big enough, Physically or oasis in the politically. It is trueThat this desert furnishes something for everyone from the sinful to the soulful. We have been going to this resort city since the days 4vhen the population of the hamlet was a whopping 5,000 without air conditioning if you are hardy souls, credulous enougn to accept the hyperbolic figures of the Chamber of Commerce. It will come as no surprise, Im sure, that gambling is legal and jobs in the industry are taken by persons from every walk of life, from Ministers to monsters, from the piritual, moral and ethical to the dissolute. I once met the manager of a large casino who was a high ranking official in a world-widreligious fraternity. His avocation was studying the various religions and he had been deeply engrossed in this activity for twenty-fivyears. He had absolutely no qualms about his vocation being associated with gambling. Las Vegas has grown to an incredible population of 270,000, most of whom are connected in one way or another with its principal inducement, in all of its variegated froms, gambling! Its skyline reveals enormous structures, primarily hotels, and more are in the process of construction at this very moment. I should not expect that what has been said here would be shocking in any degree, for it is well known world-widThere is one thing that might, just might, raise a few eyebrows, that is hypocrisy is at an absolute minimum, if not entirely I have seen dignitaries from every walk of life and every profession indulging in their favorite games of chance. All of them! What has been said up to this point, I hope will serve as a preface to some insights into the business that are not generally known. If you should be traveling to Las Vegas by highway and if you should use one of the public rest rooms on your way you will, undoubted, find a quantity of Dhamphlets outlininghow you can get a fun package worth large sums of money if you will present the phamnhlet to the desk of a motel on your arrival in Fun City. As the police stories on TV tell it, it is the M.O. or modus operandi used to induce the unwary to devote some time and money in the various gambling emporiums. Common sense dictates, it seems to me, a couple of things to remember, namely that these people are in business to separate you from some of your money -l- egitimately, of course- - and the purpose is to lure you into their places of business. Theres an old cliche that tells it like it is, Whenever you get something for nothing you get cheated. Another thing for which the city is noted, is that it is the convention center of the world. The hotels spend millions to promote its business through such contrivances as world famous golf tournaments, prize fights, tennis matches, etc., not to mention the most important segement of promotion which is the spending of millions of dollars on world renowned movie and television stars who appear in their lounges and show rooms. Even in a permissive society there are still many who want to avoid public scrutiny and perhaps scorn, so they wend their way there, to do their thing, free from prying eyes. No attempt is being made here to promote Las Veags, 'they dont need me as a part of their promotional machinery. However, if you are planning to go there or if you are a regular habitue there are a few tips which you should consider, especially if you are on a limited budget. The downtown area has real good restaurants, shows and gambling devices and in general you get a better break for your money. On the crap tables for instance, you can wager from 25 cents to $5,000 and in most places they give you a lagniappfi in the form of double odds, (dont ask for an explanation of the double odds statement. ) Additionally, it is said that the slots are more liberal. Most of the casinos downtown keep cocktail waitresses busy by furnishing refreshments for those engaged in any of the gambling activities, slots, keno, 21 and craps. On the other hand, the strip hotels, appear to, cater to the more affluent, therefore, they are somewhat more discriminating in dispensing their gratuities. In recent years a metamorphosis has taken place that is good news for those who travel in trailers, motor homes trailer and campers. The most modern and parks are operated by the strip hotels and at reasonable rates. They are constantly patrolled by security police, they are clean and sanitary and nearly all have beautiful multi-facete- d e e Bicentennial te swimming pools. One of the gimmicks that are used by many hotels and motels is to quote rates for one person based on what they call double occupancy, I have noticed that some airlines quoting vacation rates use the same ambiguity. Personally the practice is, in my book, reprehensible. A very useful tool to greater enjoyment and more economical operation is to know someone in the ments. In which case the house will buy a breakfast or a dinner, make show reservations etc., but, of course, they will not in good judgment render these services unless you are a known patron. As has been stated previously, Im not doing a promotional for anv.one ip. Las Y$gas but rather as a service for my reader (?). We found a motel called the Lotus Inn, it is operated by the famous Hyatt House chain, they have lovely accommodations for two persons for $10 per day plus tax. Their toll free number is Their rates are only slightly higher for holidays and weekends. I have a long time friend who is the casino manager of Binions Horseshoe hotel and casino, downtown. His name is Pete Pequeen, tell him I sent you! Also Howard Hughes owns a strip place called the Silver Slipper, its a great place to see a show, eat and do whatever pleases you. Billy Weir is the casino manager. Say Hello for me if you have a chance. Another Howard Hughes hotel is the Frontier. It is a lovely place and they have been booking for years, outstanding shows in the Music Room and in the lounge. The day shift mogul is Jimmy Mahar and like Pete and Billy they dont come any nicer. Rots of Ruck. action was taken and Mr. Thon his shrugged hnnMar with resignation. The perennial question of 7 animal control was resurrected for the umpteenth time and no definite action was taken.Mayor Parker is to attend a meeting of the county commissioners at their next meeting and asked the council for advice and limitations on the committments which might be made. The question of keeping of the minutes of the council was brought up for discussion. Several persons suggested that in compliance with the law that the minutes should be kept in a book (taken to mean bound) as a permanent changeable record un- for perpetuity. Tara Blevins, deputy recorder, appeared at the council with a large number of girls who, it is presumed, were members of a soft ball team, of which she is a part. She asked the City Council to sponsor the soft ball team by donating enough money to buy shirts and caps. The council voted to buy the equipment asked for by the group. center (L to R) Worthy Grand Patron George C.
