Show 6 Sun Advocate, Price, Utah Thursday, May 8, 1975 g J2an-"fldvoca- ta r HOW 10 TAKE THE TUN ' OUT OF GOLF i?y Pite tfARg5 WiLBy Smith Sport Spots5 aa , BORLA By WALTER A Carbon County bowler, Louis (Louie) Wahl of Helper, put on one of the most fantastic exhibitions of bowling seen in Northern Utah in recent years this past weekend as he swept all the major individual honors in the annual Golden Spike tournament in the Rainbow Lanes at the Junction City. The tournament is sponsored by the Union Pacific Railroad, ran over three complete weekends, with 138 teams entered and hundreds of individual bowlers. Whal walked off with the scratch prize by posting a 2102 total for the nine games he rolled in the meet. He easily won the singles, scratch prize with a three-gam- e series of 730, took the singles handicap honor's with 754; and teamed with Elmer Hamilton of Helper to take the doubles title with a 1422 score. Whal had his best three-gam- e series in the singles competition, posting scratch games of 246,257 and 227. He picked up his high game of the meet, a 278 in the first game of the doubles, following this with games of 223 and 222 in this event. The H.T.H. Racing team of Helper, which Wahl was a member of in the tournament, finished third in team competition. The team consisted of Mike Fromm, Bill Nielsen, Hamilton, Ken Funk and Wahl, all of Helper. Whals three games in the team event were 236, 235 and 178 to give him an average of 233 for the nine games he rolled in the tournament. Wahl is a disabled veteran of the Vietnam war and first began blowling as a junior high school youngster when the Bonnie Lanes were first opened years ago. He recovered from serious wounds sustained in the Far East conflict, spent many months undergoing surgery after surgery in an Army hospital in Denver before coming back to Helper for a long slow recovery. He has been employed at the Bonnie Lanes during the past two years and from the manner in which he stormed through the recent Ogden tournament, he has apparently won his fight to regain his health and is eyeing an opportunity to turn pro in the bowling ranks. sss It looks like a banner summer on the local sports scene basis has coming up. Babe Ruth baseball on a county-wid- e already started with the opening games played at East Carbon last Saturday. Nine WBB A leagues in the Carbon-Emer- y area for boys 9 thru 12 are set to begin play, most of them starting on Saturday, May 17. The softball league started play this week and this takes in the entire county. The fine showing by the Carbon High baseball team this spring has sparked the diamond interest among the teenage set and American Legion play will take right off where the prep activity ends. This writer is wondering if there isnt room or the time is right again for adult baseball, amateur play. Surely there are many former prep, Legion and college players interested and with two good fields now available it could go. Carbon jumped out to an early lead in the first inning with a single tally, fell behind in the third frame and then went out ahead with a couple of runs in the fourth before putting on the cclincher in the seventh. Reggie Farliano hurled four-hi- t ball for the Dinos and the two run outburst by the Dons in the third inning were both unearned although it was Farliano himself who opened the door for Spanish Fork by overthrowing first base on a roller back to the mound. The Dino senior n 6-- 2 righthander had excellent help from his infield throughout the game with the exception of the momentary lapse in the third inning. Roy Jewkes made a fine catch of a popup deep in foul territory behind first base. Greg Mele went deep in the hole between first and second to come up with a ground ball and throw the runner out at first. Mark Martinez handled seven chances at shortstop during the game, the biggest play coming in the bottom of the seventh when his long throw from the hole between short and third accounted for the second out of the frame after Farliano allowed a single and plunked the second hitter in the back to put two Dons on the base paths.
