For the second time in less than a month this was the case late Sunday afternoon when young Larry Hribar was struck down by a bullet, the victim of an accidental shooting. Here was a young man looking forward to an early autumn wedding, a return to CEU and another year of playing the game he so dearly loved, baseball. All was ended in a matter of minutes. The passing of Larry surely marks an end to an era of youth baseball in the county. With his twin brother, so identical that most people couldnt tell them apart, Larry and Garry Hribar became for their baseball activity, well known not only locally, but state-wi- d activity. At the urging of their father, the two began throwing and hitting a baseball to each other from the time they were able to walk. They were WBBA at the age of 10, played in two championship WBBA Little World Series games, moved on to Pony League, American Legion, high school and junior college ball, standouts all along the line. There are a great many fond memories attached to the pair though these comparatively short number of years. When they were younger one would pitch and the other catch, then they would trade positions and no one would know the difference, their styles were so similar. There was the day in the WBBA series in Santa Susana, Calif., when the opposing managers accused the Helper managers of switching-basebashirts on the two boys, insinuating that the same boy was doing all the pitching, that no two could pitch with such marked similarity. As the two boys each pitched and won a game in the WBBA series at Bountiful and when Helper lost the championship the last day, a Salt Lake City sports writer wrote the next day, Had the Hribar twins been triplets Helper could have conceivably won the a New Car or Fishing Buggy! all-sta- rs jury. ll ..vVCc , t k'v-- 4, eleven-year-old- mmvtrn - 4k i S-- Photo s, Wes Peterson, center, WBBA championship. loss In the WBBA series There was the memorable Price Trading Sporting Goods, holds box of tickets as in in the California 1964, game struggle with Johnny Borla, left, and Greg Mele draw out the championship of the 1969 American Legion state Clearfield in the effort. tournament when winners in the Pony League the sterling play of Larry at shortstop kept the Johnny and Greg were the top salesmen among the Helper team in the game inning after inning. The quick reply was "Not one, but two. And now one is gone. The combination of Larry and Garry Hribar will long be remembered in local baseball circles.
