Now closing its second year, the special education program is geared to motivating the underachiever to achieve his potential All academic subjects are taught in addition to arts and crafts, music and a physical education stint beginning every morning with jogging around the gym cr outside. Exercise games, basketball, jump rope, coordinating on the balance beam are part of the daily schedule. Each child has a separate program geared to his level. All join in the behavior modification reward system using chips. A red chrp counts 15 points, a blue 10 and a white 5. They lose chips when behavior is unacceptable or gain bonus chips for extra effort. If emotional outburst fails to respond to this method, the offend-er is put into the time out room fer 2, 3, or even 10 minutes while he thinks things over. The children have made a library of transparencies, pictures taken from color books, traced on plastic sheets and painted with magic marker. These pictures are magnified on the wall by the opaque projector and stories built around them. At certain times a child may choose a record and p'ace it on the player. Gay Linn danced all the way down the hall as she went out for recess. Teacher Ruth Litster would like to introduce a cooking unit but facilities are lacking. The class is housed in the southwest room of the old elementary school because there is no room in the new elementary building. The gymnasium is just down the hall and is an advantage in gym work but a handicap to c'ass work when the junior cr high uses the floor. Students come from all over the county and range in aces from 10 to 16 years. Albert Smith attends l2 day and the otlvr half at the junior high. Greg Morten-so16, a handsome sturdily built lad, is going through the primary grades again because a car accident blacked out his memory. Greg was brain injured March 11, 1969, in an accident which cost the life of his driver companion. Greg lav unconscious for me month in a Salt Lake hospital.
