Show Growlh of Telephone Service Reflects Advancement of Utah Economic Picture Continued economic growth in "Utah was reflected in the operations of The Mountain State Telephone Company during 1958. Over 15.000 telephones were added during' the year bringing the total telephones connected to the company lines in Utah to over 301,000, according to Philip B. Horsley, manager of the Price office. The rapid growth of the telephone business during the past few years has been unequaled in the history of Utah. It required sixty-tw- o and one-ha- lf years to connect the first 100.000 telephones, eight and one-ha- lf years 'for the second and only seven to install the third 100,000 Mr. Horsley pointed out. Nearly 13 million dollars were spent in new construction and service improvements in Utah last year. Automatic dialing equipment costing million dollars three and was installed in the new building addition at 70 South State Street in Salt Lake City. This service improvement enables telephone operators in many Utah cities to dial long distance calls directly to. the called telephone in distant cities without the assistance of 'another operator. 'A building was erected and is now ready for the installation of dial equipment for a new exchange at Bryce Canyon. Construction is in progress on dial buildings at American Fork, Lehi and Logan. When the new exchange in Logan is placed in service in August, Logan telephone customers will be able to dial their own long distance calls. This will be the first direct distance dialing exchange in Utah. Thousands of miles of long distance circuits were added during '58. radio relay microwave systems were installed between Salt Lake City and Provo, and Salt Lake City and Idaho Falls. Additional long distance wire circuits were added between the major cities throughout' the state. . The usage patterns of telephone service changed during 1958. Long distance calling increased, extension telephones in residences were more prevalent, and a second line for with individual telephones teenagers was installed last year for many families. Hands - free speaker phones found their place in many kitchens during 58. These phones are one of the latest additions of tjie telephone company toward carefree calling. The instrument is a normal telephone with a microphone and a highly efficient amplifier added to its base. By merely pressing a button the new telephone may be answered and without lifting the receiver the user can carry on a conversation while performing the daily tasks of feeding the baby, ironing, or mixing a cake. It is very popular during the early morning telephone visit that has become an Ameri-- i can custom. Handicapped people, unable to hold a conventional receiver, have found the push button, hands-fre- e phone the key to a new life. The 1959 construction program will keep pace with the expanding economy of the state. Expenditures for new buildings, dial conversions and other service improvements in the amount of nearly 13 million dollars are planned. New telephone instruments and services adapted to meet the specific needs of both business and residence customers will be introduced. A smaller colorful telephone will be marketed for residential use. For example, based on a $4,200.00 yearly average, the highest benefit payable to a wage earner in 1959 would be $116.00 per month. However, if the same wage earner earned $4,800.00 in 1959 prior to his retirement, his benefit would be increased to $119.00. If he continued to work at the $4,800.00 level through 1961, his benefit would go up to $121.00 per month.' In addition to providing a higher monthly benefit to workers, the law also raised the maximum amount that can be paid to a family from $200.00 per month to $254.00 per month.
