Show Page Two fhe LET THEM KNOW Nobodys going into the woods after mousetraps unless he knows why hes going. Thats the essential service of advertising to tell which is the better mousetrap. Advertising tells you which mousetrap whether it be an automobile or a can opener has the best construction, the most efficient operation and the best adaptability to your needs and pocketbook. Only when you know that are you going to head for the woods if you have to. All the advertising in the world isnt going to sell an inferior product, and theres a long list of failures to prove it. But good products dont sell if people dont know about them, and theres almost as long a list of failures to prove that, too. Its a good time to pause for a moment and remember that here in America, advertising has helped us employ the most people to make better mousetraps and the least expensive mousetraps in the world. Well, heres one explanation which appeared in a small newspaper a hundred years ago : A country editor is one who reads newspapers, selects miscellany, write articles on all subjects, sets type, reads proof, folds papers and sometimes carries them, prints jobs, runs on errands, cuts wood, works in the garden, talks to all his patrons who call, patiently receives blame for a thousand things that never were and never can be done, gets little money, has scarce time and materials to satisfy his hunger, and esteems himself particularly happy if he is not assaulted and battered by some demagogue who loves puppet shows and hires the rabble with a treat of cider brandy to vote him into office. A man who does all this and much more, not here recorded, you will know must be a rather busy animal ; and as he performs the work of so many persons, he must justly be supposed their representative, and to have an indisputable right, when speaking of himself, to use the plural number, and to say we on all occasions and in all places. This, we hope, clears up the whole situa tion. Now, as we were saying . . . ASSOCIATION ... SLAVES HAD SECURITY The following editorial is reprinted from the New Plymouth, Idaho, Valley Sentinel: We used to put a pretty high price on freedom in this country. As the settlers headed west for the privations and hardships of months of crawling, dusty travel, all they asked of government was to keep foreigners out of their hair while they fought off the Indians, starvation and any other obstacle to their freedom to make and build a life in a new land. Today we seem to be willing to piddle away this freedom for security, security from hunger, want and hardship guaranteed by government. We forget that the plantation slaves of the south had all these things we prize so highly today as long as they had kind, benevolent masters. The only price they paid for it was their freedom. We, too, can have complete security at the same price but who can guarantee that our masters will always be kind and Thirty-Yea- rs TWENTY YEARS AGO FroM lbs FOtt e( Tbs Sun Red Cross officials of Carbon chapter claim that this is an state record: Last Wednesday the material necessary for carrying on the annual Red Cross membership drive was delivered to Castle Gate. The next day I eagerly opened the Congressional Record and there was my speech, word for word, just as I had given it. There was just one thing wrong. The Record had given Rep. Oren Harris (D., Ark.) credit. I stormed down to the Record office and gave them a good talking to. When they apologized, I felt ashamed, and told them I was sorry for blowing my top.
