Show Tke Sun - 4$dir&c&$e Second Section Thursday, November 20, Higher Standards Hike Draft Call Rejections The 'rate or rejection by the Army of Selective Service registrants has increased about 10 per 1958 cent as a result of higher standards made effective last August. However, there has been no increase in the draft calls, which are running about 11,000 a month. Whether the impending cutback of another 30,000 men by the Army will affect the calls could not be determined at once. Draft calle represent only a fraction of the young men of 19 through 25 draft age who enter the armed forces, the reserves and the National Guard. The Navy, Marines and Air Force are depending solely on And volunteers and the Army has both of those sources of manpower supply in addition to the draft. Selective Service has no statistics on what percentage of draft-ag- e youths actually meet their military obligation through the draft, volunteer service or the re- 1 serve. A sizeable number of youths sign up when they are 17, before they are required by law to register. Even with the low draft calls, a Selective Service official said, the physically and mentally fit and "unencumbered young man, nationwide, still faces 100 per cent certainty of being drafted by the time he is about 23. Part of the difference is accounted for by the fact that women tend to marry younger than men. Also a Census Bureau spokesman said Friday, some men who are divorced or separated apparently report themselves single while their former mates stick closer to the facts. Other news from the bureau: There are 4.200,000 single men n the 4 age group, compared with 3,100,000 women. This is the age group in which most families are formed. Men are marrying younger than ever. The proportion of men 18-2- 4 who are married has increased 75 per cent since 1940. In all age groups, combined single men outnumber single women by 14,300.000 to 11,800.000 But there are more women than men in this country about 1 million more.
