California, for instance, pays $1,200 per year for the entire term elected. In case the session of the legislature lasts longer than 100 days, California legislators are allowed $12 per day. Wyoming pays $12 per day for regular sessions and $10 per day for special sessions. Arizona pays her legislators $8.00 per day and allows 20 cents per mile for transportation. Colorado pays $1,000 for the two years and allows traveling expenses. Montana pays $10.00 per day and 7 cents per mile to legislators who have to travel to and from the capitol. In Nebraska, legislators draw $1,744.18 for the two year term and actual traveling expenses, and in Nevada the lawmakers draw $10.00 per day and 10 cents per mile. Oregon pays $8.00 per day and 10 cents per mile. Idaho and Washington pay $5.00 per day and transportation at the rate of 10 cents per mile. Eastern states are much more liberal writh their lawmakers. Pennsylvania pays $3,000 per regular session and $500 for each special session, and allows the lawmakers to make one round trip home each week at state expense. New York pays $2,500 per year and allows traveling expenses for one round trip home each week. Illinois pays $5,000 for the two year term and allows transportation expense. In the south, Alabama allows legislators $10 per day ; Arkansas $500 per year, with $6 per day extra in case of a special session; Georgia, $7 per day; Mississippi $1,000 per session; North Carolina $600 per year, with an additional $8 a day for special sessions; South Carolina pays $10 per day straight; Texas, $10 per day; and Virginia allows $720 for each regular and $360 for each special session. In Utah legislators are allowed $4 per day and a 60 day session and 10 cents per mile for one round trip each session. In case a session runs over 60 days, legislators in Utah must remain on the job without extra pay. A constitutional amendment is being offered this year to make the pay of Utah lawmakers $300 per year. that limited anti-prima- campaign basis was ry finally discarded. People of Utah should not just casually accept their direct primary setup as permanently a method of selection of candidates for political office. There is a concerted campaign being carried on under the surface with the purpose of wrecking the runoff and it is not only possible but entirely probable that the showdown will come at the next regular session of the legislature. It will be well for the voters to keep this in mind, to select those who will serve them in a legislative capacity only after assurance that those chosen will stand steadfast in support of the direct primary as it stands today so far as candidate selection is concerned. That this was simply a sniping expedition by its promulgators there can be no question now, a portion of an anti campaign which is being carried on in opposition to our war effort. It is somewhat in line with the proposal of an Illinois congresswoman recently who introduced a legislative measure which would have tied the hands of the commander-inchie- f so far as conduct of the war is concerned, clearly a step contrary to concepts of conduct of a war by such a nation as ours. One does not necessarily have to agree with every war move made by the leaders of the nation but certainly it seems that all should be united in giving full support to our nations war campaign. And shooting at our allies with such home distributing propaganda as that canard about Russia quitting the war after driving the German from her own land is doing anything but lending aid to the United States in the war. Let us hope there will be more silence in the future that KEEP THIS IN MIND, FOLKS on the part of those who originated or supcampaign as describported the Desires and designs of old line political ed here.
