O GENERAL ELECTRIC be able to make their selections of candidates for public office in accordance with their own desires and not be subjected to the dictates of those who would, and do too often, control politics for the benefit of themselves or those whom they serve. This new system (in Utah) of selecting candidates affords the people a real opportunity to secure the type of government they desire. It will be reflective of the interest they take in such matters and the responsibility will of necessity be placed at the doors of the voters insofar as the brand of governing they receive. It does not tend to cure all political ills, it is, however, a battle victory for the people in a war which consists of many clashes. No war of any consequence has been won by one battle. And politics in this nation must be considered in the war class, a field of action in which the countrys economic structure quality is determined. The direct primary election system law is a splendid victory for the people, the value of which cannot at once be appreciated. It has thrust powTer into the voters hands, the full benefit of which can be gained only through exercising good judgment by the people as a whole. This advance will be attained only to the extent that careful study and action is given in taking advantage now afforded the public in making their candidate selections accordingly. is happy to have contributed in its The limited way toward the success of the direct primary campaign. The splendid support given this measure for more democratic selection of political candidates by the weekly newspapers of eastern and southern Utah (practically all of the dailies in the state being in opposition) played an important part in making the campaign successful, an indication areas of the that the newspapers of the state have real strength in that they to a splendid degree reflect the attitude of the people of their districts.
