Blakhawk Arena named after local Indian chief The new equestriancivic arena will be named "Blackhawk Arena" in honor of an local indian chief, Blackhawk. Julie Durfey gives us this look at the life of Chief Blackhawk. A historical marker south of Salina tells of the Blackhawk War and the Indian depradations in South Central Utah. But as I began reading about Blackhawk and his war with the Whites, I became fascinated with the history of Sevier County - the Mormon settlers and their relationship with the Native Americans in this area. Blackhawk was a Ute Indian bom at Spring Lake, near Payson. He grew up in that valley, and as a youth was a friend to the Mormons. He would work in their fields in exchange for food and other items. On occasion he would have dinner at their homes, and had even been known to attend their church. But as Blackhawk grew to be a young man, he also grew more resentful of the Whites. Every year more came west taking Indian lands and more fish from the streams and more game from the valleys. In the winter of 1864-6an near Utes of wintering encampment -- 5, Gunnison contracted smallpox. Havingno resistance to white mans diseases, many died. The indians believe that the Mormons were using bad medicine against them, and that they (the Mormons) were responsible for the deaths of their loved ones. They began talking of revenge, and the young warriors, including Blackhawk were eager to begin. Cattle and horses began to disappear from some settlements. Settlers heard rumors of the Indians wanting revenge, and that they had said they will kill Mormons and eat Mormon beef. A meeting was called at Manti between whites and Indians to talk about the troubles and find a solution. The meeting was held at Jerome Kemptons place. A number of prominent Utes were there along with many settlers. It seemed a solution was being reached, when a young Chief, 4-- H Jake Arropeen spoke up in anger. His father had died in the smallpox epidemic the previous winter. An interpreter, John Lowry tried to calm Arropeen, but an argument Three winners were named in each division as follows: A group - those 9 to 1 1 years of age: 1st, Angelina Schena; 2nd, Clint Torgersen; 3rd, Destiny Shaw. B. group - those 12-1- 3 years old: 1 st, Bary Barney; 2nd, Holly Trapp; 3rd, Rosanne Riddle. C. group 4-19 year olds: 1st Lindsay Johnson; 2nd, Heidi 3rd Treena Jacobsen. Other youth received certificates in recognition of their participation and accomplishments. broke out between the two. Arropeen pulled an arrow to his bow. Lowry saw this and pulled the young Chief from his horse and roughed him up. The meeting broke up in anger. The Indians moved back into the hills and sent runners to far off camps to band the Indians together to move against the whites. So it was on Sunday, April 9, 1865 that Chief Blackhawk heard news of the meeting at Manti. His heart filled with fire - and the Blackhawk war was begun.
