Don't buy a dried out Christmas tree Would you buy a loaf of bread that is not fresh or moist? The same holds true for Christmas trees. Youre not going to eat your tree, but a dry, old tannenbaum makes excellent food for fire. Once needles dry out on a tree even they do not easily when the tree is placed in a stand with water, said Michael Kuhns, USU Extension forester. The best way to ensure that your tree is fresh is to buy from a local grown' or Out of state trees sold in many Christmas tree lots may appear fresh, but can be old and dried out, he added. To check for freshness, Kuhns said to gently pull on several needles. If many come off, the tree is probably too dry. You can lift the tree and strike the butt end on the ground. If many needles fall offof the twigs, the tree is probably not fresh. Finally, pull of a couple of needles and break them to see if they are moist and fragrant Theres no need to worry about old, unattached needles accumulated inside the crown.' Though these needles can be messy and a fire hazard, they do not indicate a poor tree - and can be easily removed. Once a fresh tree is purchased, keep it outside until you are ready to decorate it If you store it in a place where it doesnt freeze, re-cthe bouom of the stump and set it in water. This opens the trees vessels. Keep it away from sun and wind to prevent drying. When you are ready to bring the tree in, apply a fresh cut at the bottom of the stem one more time. Once inside, the tree should be placed in a sturdy stand that holds at least one gallon of water. A fresh tree can lose this much water a day. small stands just dont hold enough water, he noted. Be sure to keep the tree away from heaters, furnace vents, televisions or other heat sources. ut Old-fashion- ed At The China Gate Cafe We will prepare the finest for your holiday parties!
