Its time to batten down the hatches. Since heating your home and water accounts for about 75 percent of the energy used around the house, it makes sense to spend a little time to insure that these two energy eaters are held in check. The following checklist can help you save a significant amount of energy and money at a relatively low cost. 1. Get that thermostat set back! You will save 3 to 5 percent for every degree turned back. Look into getting an automatic set back thermostat Cost is $35 to $40. 2. Get out a comfortable sweater and start wearing it and other extra layers of clothing to allow you to set back the thermostat farther. No cost. 3. Clean your furnace filter now and every two months thereafter. Cost $1. 4. Get your heating system cleaned, inspected and adjusted. Cost is around $40 or do it yourself for free.
