Salina t One of the areas that the Salina Chamber of Commerce, the Economic Development Committecand the Salina City government should endeavor to promote is tourism for our area The 1962 stale publication Rural Utah Tourism states that Tourism represents one of the most important actmtics in the Utah economy. The tourism, travel and recreation industry has enjoyed stead growth over the past decade and continues to grow at a rate faster than that of Utahs over all econtravelers spent an omy. estimated S2 9 billion in Utah in 1991, and about 6 1 ,000 Utahns were employed in travel, tourism and recreation-relatejobs in 1991. This level of emplo) ment represents 8 2 of the non agricultural jobs in the state, up from 1 980s 7.57c. The majority of those tourism has taken a long time but the staff and administration at North Seiver High School are ready to present the schedule, structure and classes for next year to the public. Plan on atIt tending. From the first talk of change during last Septembers Back to School Night at North Sevier the plan was to select the teachers and then let them come up with the programs and classes. In December the associates were announced. In January a strategic planning session was completed where staff and citizens of the area put their heads together and set up the goals for the school and listed the outcomes for students they Out-ol-sta- felt were important. From these outcomes the associates have been attending different seminars and conventions all over the United States. From these meetings they have found that change is happening all across the US and they have been able to put some sound instructional ideas on paper. Courses will be taught and reinforced by all of the teachers. Funding has also been a headache from the beginning. The new program at North Sevier calls for paying teachers for their time plus their training. The new classes also call for waivers to present forms of educating our kids to keep the d To dollars and employment goes to the Wasatch Front and Pro o area know n asMountainlands. Central Utah and the Uintah Basin are the low est areas of the state in tourist economic benefits. Visitors to the Utah parks over the last ten years has more than doubled going from 2 5 million m 1980 to more than 5 million m 1991 We live in an area that shoulu make every elfort to capture some ol these park visitors dollars The statistics show that Sevier county is 12th in the state in tourism dependency w ith 2.317c of our economy dependent on tourism. Located in the heartland ol the western states and as die gateway to some of the moot benutilul paiks and mountain areas, Salma is in a key position to promote tourism and bolster our economy with tourism dollars. Weal need to w oik together to promote this valuable resource. Whom May Concern It To Whom It May Concern: I understand there is some gossip going around tow n and I want to set the people straight. My husband is up to Charter Cans on to get help. He went on his own tree will He realized he needed the help and this is the only way to get proper help He was not forced or threatened to go. He did it for himself and for the sake of his family. Rumor also has it that we are in the process of a divorce - which is also false. Its too bad people cant recognize them own faults and not worry about everybody elses faults. This has been an ongoing strugg'e but meetings held last week with State Vocational Director, Joe Luke, proved his support to the ideas and ideals of the new programs. These problems can be worked out. Now it is time to show the parents and patrons of the school what all has taken place in the last nine months. think you will find that this is a program of the staff at the high school. Whatever the doubts were months ago, they are being replaced with fresh, innovative ideas about educating our children. A new sense of excitement can be felt with the teachers involved. As they see what is happening in other parts of the country they are seeing the kinds of programs that will be beneficial here. Please plan on attending the back to school night at North Sevier High School on May 22. Come with an open mind and let some new, exciting ideas take root in your minds. Come and see how education can be better. There will be problems and a lot of mistakes but the outcomes are defined for student performance. Outcomes that will better prepare our youth for jobs, college or additional vocational training. d. I - Utah Legislature to meet in special session Students from Salma Elementarys fourth grade put in a lot of effort as they helped plant more than a thousand bitterbrush shrubs on Fishlake National Forest. The project was in honor of Arbor Day. Pictured are Jamison Jewkes, right; and Chance Boswell, left. Assisting the students were members of the Forest Service and other volunteers. The Utah Legislature will meet The in special session in May. state s governor is the only one who can call a special session, and is also the only one who sets the agenda for that session. To date, that agenda does not include a proposal to amend the state constitution to allow prayer in Lawmakers public meetings. however, are confident that the agenda will include the prayer amendment which must be approved by voters after clearing the legislature. Some legislators have speculated Bangerter is waiting to see the proposed wording changes before he decides to add the amendment r proposal to the agenda. Viewpoint . The Way It Looks From Here Carol S. Jensen V Laws Last weeks violence in Los Angeles in response to the verdict in the Rodney King trial was a shock to the nation and the world. More than 50 dollars worth of were killed; over a thousand injured; and a area. the in residences and businesses done to damage Well be hearing analyses of the situation for weeks to come. All trying to answer the question Why? In the beginning it was said that the burning and killing were due to the frustration at the injustice of the jurys verdict. But later as kids, parents with their kids helping, began looting and burning everything in sight -businesses owned by Blacks included - it became clear that what had begun had turned into a frenzy of looting, as a declaration of senseless killings, maiming, and destruction. The Mayor of the city said that by the end of the first 24 hours the thugs and hoodlums had taken over. One Black, as he watched a Black business bum, summed it up pretty well, I thought. Whats the matter with these people? Dont they ever take their kids to church?! Dont they ever teach them about Jesus?! he asked. Now before you hit me up for preaching without a license, all Im saying is that most often, if kids are taught moral values (such as those taught by Christianity and most other religions) by their parents - at home, most would never be involved in something like what went on last week. Education has to be a factor. Some way has to be found to keep kids in school and see that when they leave school they have some skill that will help them find a productive job. Attitude needs some adjustment too. I recently was talking to a person e mom whos family has been on welfare for many years. The take to Social was upset because she was now being prodded by Security, on her hours a few lacked and from a job. She had graduated college, Then said she on to wait not Masters. tables, emphatically. Im going added that if she did take a lower pay ing job shed be coming out on the low end. Shed have to have a pretty good job to be able to bring in what WIC, food stamps, free health and dental care, and social security were now doling out to her family. Another issue that needs to be stressed - even in our home towns, is selfrespect for life. Taking somebody's life should never be felt to be a esteem booster - or a requirement for 'belongong.' Assuredly, life is different here than in the ghettos, where violence becomes the number one goal - at any occurs daily, and cost. The problem cant be solved overnight. Last weeks actions, no matter how unpleasant, had a better side. We know now that our own civil problems must be of utmost importance to each of us, as well as our state and national leaders. We dont want to see any more Los Angeles atrocities - but if things aren't changed - this could only be the beginning. Utah's youth Two new laws affecting Utahs young people under the age of 21 are now in effect. The laws were approved by the state legislature and officially went into effect on April 27, 1992. Young Utahns under the age of 21 should be aware that one of the new laws deal with driving under the influence. It provides that any person under the age of 21 who operates a motor vehicle with any measurable alcohol in their body will receive a suspension of their dnvers license. The law, known as the Not a Drop law. Another new law requires that a juvenile judge or commissioner make a determination that 14 and 15 year olds are entering marriage voluntarily before they can get a marriage license. The young people must get this approval before asking the court cicrk to issue a marriage license. Many juveniles and most parents are unfamiliar with a 1989 law related to convicuons for any drug offense and a second alcohol offense. The law states that the court must order the suspension of a juveniles drivers license or privilege to get a drivers license for six months or their next birthday, whichever. is longest. The cou rt al so m ust order a $ 1 50 drug fine and assess 20 to 1 00 hours of community service. These are in addition to any other penalties available to the court. A roach clip, marijuana pipe or items of the type some youths hang from their mirrors or carry just to be tough can cost them their right to operate a motor vehicle if they areconvicted for possession of drug paraphernalia. 0- Dont forget Mom this weekend. Tell her and show her you love her (as you should be doing every day). I used to wonder about the old men who would get tears in their eyes when they spoke about their angel mothers. But now I realize that when youve been through at least part of what your parents experienced, you realize the sacrifices that were made daily, without complaint, for you - and you also remember that at the time, this fact daily escaped you.
