Kerosene heaters and woo- - Jr jsv1 g V Jr Snow College Activity Center Wednesday November 6, 1991 7:00 P.M. And 9:30 PM. Sponsored By KMTI dbuming stoves can provide a welcome defense against the escalating costs of home heating. When used property these stoves are safe, warm and energy efficient. But careless use can mean fire, property damage, or even injury and death. The Consumer Products Safety Commission makes the following recommendations for using kerosene heaters: Kerosene presents a risk of fire. Be sure the heater you purchase has a spill proof4 mechanism to keep the fucj contained if the unit is accidentally tipped over. Keep the heater ajvay from furniture and upholstery.' Dont operate the heater around household activity centers such as kitchens rooms, without a protective screen to keep the appliance away from the traffic flow. Store spare kerosene outdoors in a sheltered space. Dont store it in the kitchen or near the furnace or hot water heater. Indixir pollution caused by kerosene heaters is a concern for seniors with heart or lung conditions. The Consumer Products Safely Commission has concluded that when used properly in open, well 4 ventilated spaces, kerosene heaters likely wont create hazardous levels of indoor pollution.. But they stress that heaters used in closed or poorly ventilated rooms can cause nitrogen dioxide and carbon monoxide emissions to build up. Basic safety precautions include: Use correct fuel. Never use gasoline or lighter fluid. Keep the heater clean. If the room gets too hot, turn the heater completely off, not just down. Running the heater at low temperatures leads to incomplete combustion of the fuel and could produce harmful pollutants. Select as spot with good cross ventilation when installing a healer. If you purchase a newer model, look for one with double glass chambers, which eliminate the indoor pollution threat by recycling emissions. For woodbuming stoves, the most important safety precaution is to use only wood prepared for burning. Dont use scraps of building wood for fire. It may have been treated with arsenic as a preservative. Dont burn plastic garbage. It emits toxic fumes when melted. Dont bum charcoal indoors. The carbon monoxide gas it produces, while odorless and colorless is lethal. You can stay warm and safe this winter - and save money if you use your kerosene heater or woodburning stove correctly. - - -- Sanpete County Fair Board Snow College Activity Center Tickets Available At: Snow College AC Ephraim Burns Saddlery, Salina General Admission $6.00 $1 0.00 Reserved Seating r There's more to February than Valentines Vacation Month.
