Tabernacles were built mostly in the geographical center of Latter-day Saint settlements and became important visual symbols of both the temporal and spiritual strength of the Mormon Church. The Box Elder Tabernacle took more than 25 years to build. Native stone was hauled to the site for eleven years prior to the commencement of the building in 1876. The honor f hauling the first load of stone for the Tabernacle went to Hans P. Hansen, of Bear River City. The original building was completed in 1881 but was then destroyed by a fire in 1896 that left only the stone walls. Also lost in the fire were such items as the $800 pipe organ, $300 worth of music, and the $200 silver sacrament (communion) set The rebuilt building was dedicated March 27, 1 897. The original building had cost $6,000 to build; the rebuilt tabernacle cost $13,000. Truman Angell, Jr., supervised to remember when in the company of an older person: Live with him. Listen to him. Lament with him. Laugh with him. Learn from him. Dignity of Preference. We should try to continue to make life an ongoing adventure. Encouragement to make choices everyday is important. Which clothing does he feel like wearing today? Would he prefer coffee, tea, milk or punch with his lunch? What kind of dressing for his salad? It may not seem like much of a decision, but it helps add zest to his life. Dont assume that because he felt like sitting on his chair all day yesterday that he will feel the same today. Make suggestions - ask him if he would like to write a letter, paint, take a walk, visit someone else. Letting the olderperson make the decision indicates to him or her that he or she is a person of worth to you. Personal Opinions. Everyone else has opinions and expresses them. This doesnt mean you have to argue about politics or religion, but you can allow the older person to express their feelings and respect them. Encourage them to follow through on their convictions by attending their own church and the particular meetings to go to and make sure you help them get there. New features included a major buttressed tower in front; a Gothic door and window bays; exteiisive decorating corbeling and dentil runs, and the most beautiful and elegant wooden steeple to be found in the state. Sometimes older folks cannot always protect their needs and rights of dignity. Sometimes it depends on how the younger society perceives aging and the values the contributions of experience and wisdom which can or have been handed down. At the Care Center we are constantly reminding and inservicing our staff about doing our best to help maintain dignity and self esteem, We care givers at the Center, along with families and friends, must all do our best in working together to help our loved ones and older friends keep their dignity. Let me share four kinds of dignity which we can help our older friends keep as long as they live. The Dignity of Physical Privacy. Everyone needs privacy, a place to be alone occasionally in order to think our own thoughts and do private things. Even when a person needs help bathing and dressing, he appreciates the consideration protecting him from the view of others. Modesty is firmly entrenched. Indifference to it is easily interpreted as a loss of worth and value as an individual. Personal Memories. To the older person, the past is a time when his dignity and worth were established. Too often we diminish that sense of worth by failure to take the time to listen to stories of deeds and adventures experienced in earlier years. There are five Cardio-pulmonar- . Gulf War will have effect on agriculture Utah farmers and ranchers will likely experience only minor impact from the war in the Persian Gulf, according to the Utah Farm Bureau Federation. According to UFB President Ken Ashby, Delta, erratic energy prices are the biggest uncertainty facing the nations farmers as war unfolds in the Persian Gulf area. This uncertainty could, in tuhi, cause commodity prices to be more volatile, according to the farm leader. If a drawn-ou- t conflict causes major disruption in the flow of crude oil, or the destruction of a number of refineries, experts say oil prices could start going back up gain to perhaps as high as $40 a barrel, Ashby said. That could likely cause a deeper U.S. recession which, combined with higher oil related production costs, would cut deeply into the pockets of this nations farmers and ranchers. On the other hand, Ashby said a quick resolution of the war could help keep crude oil prices down and help draw the nation out of a slow recessionary spiral, as well as improve the outlook for U.S. farm If the war ends soon, I products. think well see the markets start to stabilize, Ashby said. Whatever happens to oil prices, American Farm B ureau Economist Terry Francl says that each $5 a barrel change in oil prices equates to about a $1 billion change in the fuel and petroleum related expenses paid by American fanners. If there is no disruption or major refinery destruction, he predicts oil prices will hold in the $23 a barrel range. To help stabilize supplies. President Bush has decided to release oil from the U.S. strategic reserve. Farm industry experts believe the economic impact of war will hit both grain and livestock sectors. Ashby says U.S. rice producers are believed to have lost $1 billion in lost exports to Iraq since August 2. Citing both world wars, some outside grain analysts have pointed out that long, drawn out world conflicts can actually provide support to grain markets. However he notes that I think we can all agree that the shorter the war, the better for everyone. |
