The familiar roller shade can make a considerable difference both in winter and summer energy savings. They can save 14 to 13 the indoor heat lost through windows in the winter. The key to maximum energy savings is mounting the shade inside the window frame with no more than 14 inch clearance on the sides. Lambrequin. This is a wooden frame that surrounds the window. It may be painted, papered or covered with fabric. The lambrequin is used to reduce air leaks and the movement of the air into and out of the sides and top of the window area. Covered insulation panels. A relatively new approach to energy saving window treatment is the insulated panel. This is one of the most energy efficient window treatments you can use. The amount of heat lost through the window is reduced in proportion to the insulating value of the material in the panel. The key to maximum insulation is a tight fit within the window frame. The trapped air space between the window and the panel adds important insulation value. Insulated Roman Shades. These are made of batting and tightly woven fabric front and back. And it would cost me $39 to make the phone call. What followed was a quick reminder of the importance of not dialing any 900 numbers without consulting mom or dad, and an introduction to the world of fine print Im grateful our laws require such disclosure of products and services that are advertised, no matter how fine the print may be. But sometimes I dont think we go far enough with it. For example, there would be fine print on the bottom of all credit cards that says: Overuse of this piece of plastic may result in financial bondage. All junk food should bar the disclaimer; If you eat too much of this youll get sick. And MTV should be required to occasionally flash a message on the screen: Most of the perspective youre seeing here has no basis whatsoever in the real world. For that matter, even some of the disclaimers that currently exist should carry disclaimers. You are familiar with the labels on tobacco products warning consumers that cigarette smoking may be hazardous to their health? There should be more fine print below the fine print: This health risk is subsidized by the U.S. Government. And why limit the application of fine print to products and services? Perhaps we could find a way to warn people about concepts and ideas. Those people around the world who are just trying out their new found freedom should probably be reminded: The right of free choice means some people will choose poorly. Every banner calling for Peace Now in big bold letters, should have some smaller letters along the bottom: The cost of peace may include everything from tolerating your neighbors blasting stereo to strained international relationships. And anyone even contemplating the possibility of falling in love should be given this simple warning: It can hurt a lot Which is not to say that love -or peace or freedom or even televised loan sharks -- - arent worth the cost. Itsjustthatweneedtobe aware that there is a cost to even the best things life has to offer.
