Henry Ford said, Whether you think you can, or cant, you are That means that what we right! believe we can accomplish - we will accomplish. That applies not only to academics, but to life. The second want we should have for our children is that they can never cease to be educated - and that they will want to leam. We want them to have goals to envision what they can become. They should not be wasted on the altar of mediocrity. Only as they can picture the role they will fill in society can they be the most productive, Moss adds. Norman Vincent Peale and others have spoken eloquently on the need to visualize our goals in order to achieve them. Tied in with the visualization of what they can become, we want our students to be positive contributors to society. NSHS -- Matt Long m is hoped that our students will become canng and concerned people, caring for others, concerned for the democratic way of life, canng for life itself, concerned about enme. Psychologists say that people fall into one of two categories - the means that first Ethnocentric they care for and have concern for other people; or Egocentric - those who care only for themselves. Studies indicate that being egocentric - or thinking only of ones self, is unhealthy. Prisons and jails are filled with those who seemingly have given up canng for others. Surveys on employers indicate this to be one of the most important criteria for new employees - a caring attitude. We want our youth to take responsibility for their own actions. We want them to grow into responsible adults, Dr. Moss emphasized. We hear often of peoples rights; More times needs to be given to talking about responsibilities. Our schools should take second place to the home in teaching our youth to take responsibility for their actions. In this day and age, it is common to hear students say they are bored with school, that thcirclasses A are not challenging enough. prime goal of teachers is to instill in these youth an excitement and desire One of the things for learning. identified as distinguishing Japanese students from our own, has been their excitement for learning, Dr. Moss said. The list of wants for our graduate could also include: Cognitive (thinking skills) Problem solving skills Be able to cope with themselves, their communities and the world in which they live. These are the skills that make life enjoyable and livable, Dr. Moss added. When we become skillful in these areas, we become the movers and the shakers, the doers, the achievers.
