Show ' ( 4 i Volume 68 Number 20 1 Wednesday, May Busy evening for City Council An evening of varied discussion was on the agenda of the Salina City Council at its May 7, 1990 meeting. Problems between the Council and the City Cemetery Committee arose, and before the meeting had ended, the Council had voted to dissolve the Cemetery Committee. Council members Ronald Crane and Karren Glover had been assigned to work with the Cemetery Committee as representatives of the Council. Problems had arisen in the past because the Cemetery Committee had allegedly gone ahead with plans for improving the cemetery without first getting the approval of the entire City Council. The motion dissolving the Cemetery Committee was made by Salina City looking for Lifeguards Salina City is now taking applications for Lifeguards to work at the City Pool during the summer. Applications may be picked up at the swimmingpool office, and will be accepted until May 25 at 5 p.m. Check with Lee Christensen for more details. Awards Assembly at NSMS May 23 NS MS Awards Assembly will be held May 23 beginning at 11 a.m. in the NSMS Auditorium. Awards will be given for outstanding achievement throughout the school year. Band Concert May feature NSMS and NSHS students 1 7 will Students from NSMS and NSHS in a Band Concert, May in NSHS Auditoruim. The 17, concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend. will join Eighth Grade Advancement ceremonies May 24 Thursday - May 24, at 2 p.m. will be Eighth Grade Advancement ceremonies at NSMS. After a short program, certificates will be given to 90 students - the largest graduating class from NSMS. Light refreshments will be then be served to those attending. Babes in Toyland' at NS Middle School May 18, 19,21 May 18, 19, and 20, will be the North Sevier Middle School presentation of Babes in Toyland. Performances will be held in the newly remodeled NSMS Auditorium, and will begin at 7 p.m. each evening. Tickets are $2.50 per person, or $10 per family. In other action. Mayor Nyals T. Andreason declared May 19, 1990 as Poppy Day. The Mayorreported on the progress of applying for a grant for a new addition to City Hall. The Mayor also noted that anew purchase order system will be begun at the beginning of the new fiscal year, July 1. Supervisor Holt told the Council that because of the cool weather SPECIAL OLYMPICS: Salina Law Enforcement Officer Ray Anderson and Sevier County Sheriff Deputy Tom Larsen represented this area in the statewide Utah Peace Officers Association Torch Run for the Special Olympics. The run continued on through the state and the event raises thousands of dollars to be used for the Special Olympics programs. Carl Albrecht will North Sevier Seminary Graduation for North Seviers Seminary students will be held Thursday, May 17, at 7 p.m. in the Salina Stake Center. Thirty two students will receive graduation certificates and awards. The Theme of the program this year is Youre Not Alone. Albrecht, 38, was chosen at the May 10 board meeting over two other applicants, Ester Rex and Denise COok. He will fill Gates unexpired term and has filed for election to the position. State Fair looking for local talent The Utah State Fair is beginning its massive performing arts talent search for the 1990 Utah State Fair in September. Fair Di- Benefit shoot will be held to help save a life A long time resident of Milford, Donald Heath, is in need of a heart transplant Cost of such an operation is about $150,000, and the hospital demands $75,000 before a heart can be transplanted. Mr. Heaths insurance will pay only $50,000, and the Milford Gun and Trap Club is sponsoring a benefit shoot to help save a life. The benefit shoot will be a 100 target event held at the North Sevier Gun Club, Aurora, on Saturday,; May 198. Targets will be shot as follows: 50 at 16 yards 50 at 24 yards handicap Cost will be $16 per shooter. Shooters are asked to collect pledges from anyone willing to help. For example: The shooter, John Doe, pledges - friend, .20 per target broken; relative .15 per target broken; friend, 15 cents per target broken, self, 50 cents per target broken. The shooter breaks 80 targets x the $1 total for each, making $80 for the Don Heath Heart Fund. Trophies will be awarded for High gun, Highlady, High Junior, High Sub Junior, and Grand prize and trophy for high money raiser. Work has begun on the new concession stands at the Salina Rodeo Grounds. It is hoped they will be completed by the time the summer events come along, such as the Salina 4th of July celebration. In other business the Council: Okayed Supt. Holt and 2 workers attend the school for commercial drivers license in Richfield. The city will pay the expense. "Approved rebuilding of a pump at the swimming pool for $437.00, and budgeting for a new one. Supt. Holt and Councilman Crane were authorized to cut off water rent on the pressurized irrigation if and when they feel it becomes necessary. "Holt will order the same fireworks as last year for the 4th of July celebration. A thank you was given to resident Alma Blake who had worked on a generator for the city and would take no pay. The Council expressed their thanks to him for his efforts. Holt noted that Case Equipment would trade backhoes again this year for $600. The trade was approved. Councilwoman Karren Glover graduation May 6, rector, Jackie Nokes, says its the biggest talent search the state has ever seen, and winning performers will perform on a special outdoor stage dedicated exclusively to Utah talent. Utah has literally thousands of very talented people and we want to feature them at the State Fair this year, said Nokes. We want candidates from every region, county, city and town in the state. So get your act together and help us she added. put the You in You-ta- h Musicians, dancers, singers, actors, andother performing artists are asked to submit a three to five minute video tape to You-Ta- h talent Search, Utah State Fair, 155 North 1 000 West, SLC, UT 84 1 16. The tape should be slated with the name of the person or group, city or town, and county of residence. The same information must be placed on the outside label of the tape. All tapes must be received at the State Fair by June 15. Winning candidates will be notified on or shortly after July 15 and given a date and time to perform. All necessary sound equipment will be provided. The State Fair runs September and you must be available to perform any time during those dates. Please do not submit an entry if you are not available during those dates. Nokes was clear to point out that those entries not selected are certainly not losers. All appropriate tapes will be shown daily in a special video section at the Fair. Local man on national Beef Promotion Board Bradley Johnson, Aurora cattleman, recently participated in an Industry Information Committee meeting of the Beef Promotion and Research Board in Dallas, Texas. Johnson serves on the 113- - 6-- Bradley Johnson member Beef Board and on the boards Industry Information Committee which oversees industry information programs conducted with beef checkoff dollars. Industry information programs include activities enhancing the image of the cattle industry and programs that lead to new markets, marketing strategics and increased efficiency. The 12 member committee reviewed a preliminary industry information plan for 1991. They also considered comments and suggestions from industry organizations who had been asked for their reactions to the proposed plan. Beef Board members are appointed by the Secretary of Agriculture and represent producers from all areas of the industry and all regions of the country. The board administers the national beef checkoff program which is designed to improve profitability by strengthening beefs position in the marketplace and expanding consumer demand for beef. |
