WrH March 99 1QRQ Events planned in honor of Nauvoo's history A series of sesquicenten-nia- l activities for the historic Illinois city of Nauvoo is planned for 1989, according to the First Presidency of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-da- y Saints. , The main event of the 150th anniversary observance will be the dedication of the newly renovated site in nearby Carthage, where the first prophet and president of the Church, Joseph Smith, was killed in 1844. The complex includes the old Carthage Jail, an expanded visitors center, commemorative monuments, a life size statue of Joseph and Hyrum Smith, landscaping and off street parking. The dedication is set for June 27, 1989, the 145th anniversary of Joseph Smiths death. Nauvoo is situated on the Mississippi River across from the southeast comer of Iowa. It was originally settled in 1839 by Latter day Saints under the direction of BULL TEST STATION SALE Joseph Smith, and served as head- quarters of the Church until 1846 when, after the prophets death, Brigham Young succeeded him' and led his followers west to the valley of the Great Salt Lake.
