March 22. 1 989 The Salina Sun The Gunnison Valley News Accent on People Open house to honor Leona McAllister Jensen Zivio Ethnic Arts Ensemble to perform The Zivio Ethnic Arts Ensemble, an international folkdance, music and song performing group will be at Snow College on March 23. This ensemble is being hosted by the colleges cultural arts committee and will resent three afternoon workshops for students as well as an evening performance for the public. Their visit is made possible by grants and assistance from the Utah Arts Coun- cil. The Zivio ensemble is a 45 member group that performs authentic folk dances and music from Eastern Europe and the United States. The members are local singers, dancers and musicians who volunteer their time and expertise to share the enjoyment of folkmusic and dance with the local community. The group has performed at international festivals in Poland and Yugoslavia as well as the World Folkfest here in Utah. They won first place honors at the Balkan Festival in Yugoslavia in 1987. The group will present three workshops while in Ephraim which will rur. concurrently at three different locations at 3 p.m. Included is a workshop on ethnic instruments for the colleges music classes; a workshop on costumes, and dance for the elementary school; and a workshop on folkdances for the college dance classes. State Leadermete to be held April 1989 4-- H 20-2- 2 Volunteer Leaders will meet in Ogden, for the 1989 State at the new Leadermete, April 20-2Weber County Fairgrounds. Let it Shine in 89 is the theme of this years Leader-metThe highlight of the conference will be a 4-- Sharing Fair on Saturday April 22, to which all leaders, members, alumni and public are invited to come to take a Now!. Look at There will be a mountain man village, displays and demonstrations, all types of projects, and hands on workshops in shooting sports, leathercraft, tube painting, horse backpacking, etc. A unique parade of 4-- projects will be held, and the building of a 75 foot hoagie sandwich will highlight the 75th Anniversary of the Cooperative Extension Service. leaders will participate in a leader lab to increase their skills 4-- H in working with youth. There will be around 35 different workshops to attend covering a wide range of topics. A special part of the Leadermete will be the recognition of the leaders from across outstanding the state. For the first time, the Clover Key Award will be given to recognize an outstanding new leader. Also during the Leadermete, the Utah Volunteers Association will elect new representatives to their Executive Council. Kathy Frischknecht has been selected to act as the Volunteer Representative for Sanpete county. The Open House will be held at the Salina American Legion Hall, and will be hosted by her children. Friends and relatives are invited to call from 3 to 7 p.m. to greet Leona and visit and reminisce with her. This and other summer recreation area roads are routinely closed each winter season when declining traffic volumes do not meet warrants for snow removal. UDOT tries to have all the recreation areas open by the Memorial Day Weekend each year, but this depends on how much snow has accumulated and how quickly it melts in the spring. All presentations must be less than six minutes in length. Those 14 and older are set at four minutes with maximum age six minutes. Talent areas include piano, instrumental, vocal, dance and variety. Contest for wording for Utahs Vietnam Memorial Plaque A contest has been set to determine the words to be placed on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial -the plaque that will honor those Utah residents who served in the Armed Forces during the Vietnam War, and especially those who gave their lives or are missing in action. The purpose is not to justify or glorify the war, but to honor those who answered their countrys call and gave their best - and in some cases their all. It is hoped that the Memorial will be a place where Utahns can go and hopefully heal their wounds and remember their friends, loved ones, and comrades in arms who served their state and country so well. It will be located on the the state Capitol grounds and is set to be erected and dedicated in the Fall of 1989. About $229,000 has been raised.
