Children raised in this environ nent Kro up U lievinti that life wes them a livmtf; that there will .Ivvays he plenty to make life omfortable without any effort or nid for arcounUihilily. In summary, Smith noted, such hildren Kro" up "ith unrealistic xpiTtntions of the world of work which they must face on their own at some later date. Aided liv parental conspirators, the work ethic of these children is slow in coming, and sometimes does not come at all. "We don't suggest that parents apologize for their hard won affluence." said Smith, but parents can be detrimental to the child's maturation into responsible adults. Under the camoflauge of advantage, these children can lead a life of leisure with plenty of things to occupy their time. The problem surfaces when they face the real world and receive a rude awakening that life does not owe them anything. Children are not born Cornucopia Kids'. It is a process of learning unhealthy attitudes about life and living. Purchasing toys and other fun item just because the neightmrs have them. 2. Giving in to a child's demands for more only after a token resistance. 3. lasting a child begin many new projects or hobbies when the child never completes the previous ones. 4. Giving excessive help, or doing She child's homework or projects for him. 5. The latest fad items are always given to the child. G. Always providing unearned money for spending. 7. Never following through with discipline for the breaking of family rules. 1. 8. Taking the child's side, defending his actions, although you know that the childs actions were wrong. 9. Accepting rude remarks made to you by the child, and not expecting good manners and behavior all the time. 10- .Allowing children to watch TV or videos often, so that the children wont bother you. If this is the case, what do your children believe? They learn that life is secure, life is good, the horn of plenty will always be full, little will be demanded, and if something is demanded likely it can be avoided anyway. Can we see the trend? Are we part of the Cornucopia Complex?" Road work on begins STEVEN A. ROBERTS area roads 4 Year City am concerned about our present Councilman business district. feel that concern needs to be shown to the existing businesses as well as inviting and looking for new businesses. am also concerned with how our tax dollars are being spent and howthey will be spent inthe future to make this community acceptable to the young and the old. Ifeelthatmoretime should be devoted to the planning of Saiina to ensure correct decisions on future developments. would like to invite everybody to register and take the time to vote this election and become involved in Salina's government. I I I I VOTE NOVEMBER 5th STEVEN A. ROBERTS 4 Year Saiina City Council PAID POLITICAL ANNOUNCEMENT The Utah Deaprtment of Transportation recently opened bids on a project to build bridges on the from Sigurd to section of Saiina in Sevier County. Hales j 1 - 1 lJ ; il ill 1 irlv.r lu .imj . (1 f - .ti u I - f tl lit . u- - t'.iUlt-ijU.ifii'Li-f- fi , Sand and Gravel of Elsinore submitted the apparent low bid of $3,249,760. UDOTs estimate was $3,635,249. A total of seven structures will be built. Six are bridges to carry over cross streets; the last is a box culvert for the Highland Canal. Only minor traffic interference is expected at most bridge sites due to low traffic volume on cross streets. However, work at the Sigurd interchange on State Route 24 will cause interference, and construcwill tion of the bridge over US-8cause major interference. It will necessitate detouring traffic over a to bypass the local road to SR-2bridge site. Work should begin soon, contract allows 180working days and should be completed by the fall of 1986. A subsequent paving contract will be required before this section of highway can be opened to traffic. Federal funding will supply 94 percent of the project cost, with the six percent m atching funds supplied by the state. . tc-y.- i Viill fi- - i t-- lu k Vi Officer wrestles gun from irrate driver Speed trap unfair ) I ,d in a wuf I'cixtif and tsy wet t.jcy t f.js, my ouf .ay id I'uh Ueticftiliiiitly, t Lit g ia 4 of It t NUf.l T(k t am ntr g what bcfv tin JrHrf, to ill fc wall frrntrd frrdhafk IKtifrttit g otir ticyiiji iftfiJrtil erf wur tnp which occurred a Nht-.a fhie pighi c4 Al II ptn. ckJ tk a ttr lhurdy, Augut 25. atfe-eairnag Naim from the bring (Sriuuiwl off 70 Oa Jratif.g 1 t 70 the pred limit a large, praminmi i dafk, fhrrr failed a Kt fnarknd :gn, ll blitr iraffic. and r jj I quickly enough the prrd change du1) id 31 MIH. AR-- r recriving the ticket, we and look a clover retraced our look at (he ign marking the spued change and confirmed the officer's citation. I am not writing to protest the citation. I am writing to lodge complaint about the signs. When leaving an interstate on a detour I feel it is important for travellers to be guided by well posted signs. The two signs marking the reduction to 30 MIH are another matter. The first is a small sign reading 'Reduced speed ahead'; the second was the 30 MPH sign. When a driver is being asked to make a change of nearly half his spieed from 55 to 30, I think better postings are essential. I also think it is a questionable practice to establish a spieed trap right at the point of the speed change. I pride myself on driving safely. However, not only were the signs insufficient to warn me of the need for a drastic reduction, but the conditions worked me as well; it was 11 p.m., dark, and there were few signs of life to warn me of the need for reduced speed. We took note that evening as we continued our trip on the way other Utah towns marked similar spieed changes. In virtually every other case there were large signs that informed the driver that the speed was going to change, but also told what the new speed was going to be. These signs were posted by towns that were not receiving rerouted interstate traffic. I feel that Salina's practice of U frpnd n Ui 4-- u-- retaining inadequate signs and placing a speed trap right at the point of the speed change is unfair. We noticed that the officer who gave us our ticket was alreay back in the same place with his lights off. In view of the importance of tourist traffic to your city, I would think you would be receptive to any suggestions which might help avoid negative feelings such as mine, I hope my comments will be found informative and constructive.
