Even though cutthroat trout are quite common throughout Utah, most of these fish have been introduced from Yellowstone and are not the same as cutthroat trout found naturally in Utah. Work is currently underway to introduce Utah cutthroat into additional waters in Southern Utah. Areas selected for introductions include South Ash Creek and Leap Creek on the Pine Valley Mountain. Both streams were selected because of their remote location, good habitat, and low fishing pressure. Both streams are currently populated with small rainbow trout. 'Alexis', Roller Bros. Circus superstar will perform Salina. July 25th in Summer Registration is set To help new students register for fall classes, Utah State University is offering its Summer Registration and Orientation Program for ten days beginning July 22. SOAR, as it is called, provides new students a look at campus life and gives them priority on selection of classes. An orientation for parents is also offered on the same days. These Rainbow trout will be removed from the streams before cutthroat trout are introduced. Rainbow trout hybridize with cutthroat and would pose a threat to maintaining genetic purity of a unique new introduction. Treatments to remove rainbow with trout are planned for mid-Julexact dates depending on weather and progress of preliminary work. Streams will be treated with rotenone, a natural chemical widely used by agricultural and livestock interests that will not harm irrigated crops, livestock, people, or other mammals or birds. Areas treated will be restricted to up-- . stream portions of the streams above the National Forest boundary. No adverse impacts will occur downstream from the forest boundary. Utah cutthroat trout will be planted later in 1985 or early in 1986. Salvage of trout by the general public during treatment projects is not encouraged because of the small size of trout and remoteness of the area. It is also expected that trout will quickly spoil as a result of warm weather. or comments Any questions should be directed to the Utah State Division of Wildlife Resources, Southern Region Office, Cedar City. days are July 22, 23, 25, 26, 29, 30, 31, 1, 2, and 3. and August The SOAR day begins with check in at 8:30 a m. The number of remaining rhinos totals somewhere between 10,000 and 16,000. The Burr Trail is a dusty road between Boulder and Bullfrog which is used by 18 wheelers, autos, trailers and even massive drilling ngs. Some of it does run through scenic areas and a small portion of a National Park. But the main point is that Burr Trail is an existing road. It has a roadbed. It has been graded, but it does need additional engineering, roadword and paving. Were fortunate people who oppose paving the Burr Road weren't around when I was a kid. Had they been around, we likely wouldn't have the road from the Kaibab to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. We wouldnt have the road from Hanksville to Bullfrog - a road that before it was paved, ruined tires and suspensions, detached trailers, jostled boats and rattled the teeth of we who swore we would never drive it again. Fortunately, it was paved, and Lake Powell with its beauty and water sports, became one of the great recreation magnets in the West. During my years as a public official, Ive enjoyed working with most environmentalists and conservationists. But this time by opposing the paving of the Burr Trail because it goes through scenic country theyve gone too far. What if someone had been around 130 years Utah needs to improve marketing The Utah Department of Agriculture has named Rod Clifford as Director of Agricultural Marketing Commissioner Cap Ferry said Clifford will act as coordinator to the agricultural commodity groups and assist them to further develop their marketing programs. Utah can do a better job of marketing its high quality agrisaid Ferry cultural products, "New and expanded markets, both domestic and foreign are needed to help producers improve their financial situation, he said. Utah consumers need to buy more Utah produce, Clifford said. They do not understand the excellent Utah products, from fruit to meat, that we have here in the state, he added. ago to block construction on the road from Salt Lake to Ogden because it ran through scenic country? Its time for reasonable people and that includes some of the media to look at the facts of Burr Road. Every major elected Utah official who has examined the issue has agreed to the paving of the Burr Road. Interestingly, those who object most strenuously haven't even bothered to drive its length. Its also revealing to note that a National Park Service hearing in southern Utah received next to no press coverage - despite the fact that all three Utah congressmen who represent all Utahns and hundreds of southern Utahns, attended the meeting. Recently, after driving the Burr Road, a member of Governor Bangerters staff made an observation most resonable people would make if theyd get out of their armchairs and drive Burr Road: Its just another dirt road. Whats the big deal about paving it? My sentiments exactly! Meat may be a bargain If youre among the Americans who think meat is too expensive, you likely havent done any real comparison shopping lately. Student members of Utah State Universitys Animal Science Club did - and found that meat is a bargain. Some of the results may surprise consumers. For example, products used to stretch hamburger cost more per ounce ( 19 cents) than ground beef (7 cents) or lean hamburger (11 cents). Those with a sweet tooth can indulge in chocolate chip cookies at 15 cents an ounce and pay more than they would for chuck roast at 11 cents an ounce or lamb shoulder at 12 cents an ounce. Potato chips at 17 cents an ounce cost more than lamb chops at 16 cents an ounce, and as much as boneless ham. Frozen pizza at 17 cents an ounce, costs more than top sirlois steak. Haven Hendricks, professor at USU says that expressing dismay over the size of the grocery bill at the chekcout counter seems to be an American pastime, even though Americans only spend about 15 percent of their disposable income on food Love isn't something you fall into, it's something you grow.
