Everyone is invited to watch the Big Top go up early on the morning of the 25th. according to Circus TfJG by Uoyd Muliican need leaded gas survey recently conducted among Utah farmers and ranchers A shows that they still rely heavily on leaded gasoline, and would be severely impacted by an EPA effort to eliminate all fuels containing lead. The random survey showed that Utah farms and ranches have an average of 15 gasoline engines per operation. Of these engines, 97 percent utilize leaded regular gas. The EPA has determined that the use of lead in gas should stop by 1988. Many farmers indicated that they had equipment powered by leaded regular gas that has not yet become obsolete, and would not do so in the forseeable future. On July 1, EPA mandated that the lead in gas levels must be reduced by 55 percent. By January 1, 1986, lead must be reduced 91 percent, and totally by 1988. A bill currently under consideration in Congress, seeks to delay or cancel this order until further studies of a lead ban and its effect on US agriculture are completed. RICHARD B. Energy Tax Credit Taxpayers who Invested in solar, or hydro energy systems during 1984 can qualify for a credit on their income tax returns to help offset that investment, according to the Utah Energy Office. I heartily endorse this editorial, but theres more. For a small-towvolunteer fire department, ours is one of the best in the country. A large amount of credit should go to city hall for making the funds available for modern, equipment, but the men of the Fire Department deserve the lions share of credit. We all know they are there when we need them, but I dare say there are things many havent thought of. These men all have jobs or a business to run and in order to respond to a fire, they have to neglect these jobs. In th cold of winter, its not easy to be awakened in the wee hours of the morning and weather to fight a brave sub-zer- o fire, but they do it. In summer, the suits they hav1 to wear are miserably hot, but they do it, and I would bet their response time is faster than any large metro fire department. Normally, from thet time the whistle blows until you hear the truck sirens, the time is much less than five minutes. All in all, I would say we have a fine fire department we can all be proud of. With the July 4th holiday upon us, lets give these guys a break and not make them have to fight fires because someone is careless with fireworks. Everything is extremely dry and a single spark could be dangerous. With our new city park and all the planned activities and the rodeo, street dance and fireworks, it should be a nice fourth of July, and will be if we all do our part. We have a lot of good cooks in our area, so perhaps one of these years, we could contest on the 4th have a cook-of- f and add to all the present activities. are Barbeque and chili cook-off- s always a lot of fun, and who knows? Salina might become known for some famous food dish. For sure, it would attract a lot of people from far and near, just like our rodeo does now. Its just a thought. New law helps child support Those refusing to pay child support could find themselves with their wages garnisheed. The new wage withholding law, passed by the Legislature in January, is now in effect, and its purpose is to strengthen the financial position of a djvorced parent who has custody of rhildren John Abbot, of the Office of Recovery Services, notes that only about five percent of the non custodial parents make regular and on time monthly child support payments over a year's period of time. He noted that what may be more alarming is the fact that about 75 percent of the absent parents make no monthly contribution at all to support their children. Heres how the law works: If the parent who owes the obligation fails to pay hi child support payments for an accumulated 30 days, the Office of Recovery Services will send a warning notice. The absent parent will then have a chance to point out any errors, etc. Once the conditions of due process have been met, if the parent still does not comply, an order is delivered to his or her employer. Custodial parents having difficulty obtaining regular monthly support payments may call toll free 8525 for more information. No one fat es cancer alone. Call us. I AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY the IRS.
