A message is whispered around a circle and everyone laughs at how much it changes by the time its gone through several interpreters. The adult version of Telephone is the great American rumor mill. I -- cj t count the story. I cant even number of times weve heard, "But such- - a it said so in such-anpaper. Whats ended up happening is that flat-owrong statements have taken on a life of their own. The wrong information is recycled over and over until it becomes folklore. Using old ghosts and skeletons: The story of the 1982 Career Book. In our 1982 Career Book, we talked about the healing power of herbs - for everything from bee stings to cancer - that has been cited through the ages. We presented the general background on herbs in footnotes. We didnt make it clear begin to ut The scary part is that more than half of the stories got it wrong. enough that those same healing powers would not necessarily result from using Herbalife products. In made the 1983, we voluntarily distinction very clear in the book. But the old book continues to be quoted as though it was issued yesterday. Cooperation with the government - the Senate, the Food and Drug Administration and others - was, is and always will be a cornerstone of Herbalife policy. And yet we see stories often which would have you believe we still make those claims. The caffeine scare over our NRG tablets. An interviewer for Cable News Network recently held up an NRG tablet, looked at it with a scow and said earnestly daughter of Mr. Family to the camera: Thats caffeine. What he didn't say is that each NRG tablet has about 4 percent caffeine, and that this caffeine is part of a natural herb. Each tablet has about 30 milligrams of caffeine d the amount found in about of what a f a cup of coffe, or soft drink has. And because this caffeine occurs naturally, it is not necessary to identify it on the package list of ingredients, just as it is not listed on chocolate or cocoa packages. This caffeine is no diet pill additive that kills your appetite and keeps you awake all night. And yet even the New York Times tells us that caffeine is the active ingredient in NRG. Not true. The theory of the pyramid thats ready to collapse. If you read the Herald Examiner lately, or seen countless other news stories on Herbalife, you have probably heard somebody call our company structure a pyramid or endless chain scheme. These are great buzzwords. They have lots of pep for headlines. They brighten even the dullest story. But theyre also gross oversimplifications. Theyre untrue. Almost every company has layers . of management. Big comp-u'have dozens of layers. Herbalilt ia essentially three - not much different than the multilevel marketing plans of Amway or Mary Kay cosmetics. Nobody gets anything if they dont work for it. Our marketing plan pays on only three levels, which distinguishes us from pyramids. Our products sell to customers - that is where the rewards come from, not from the sale of distributor-- one-thir- one-hal- ships. 6. Maon, Aurora, chaarn Ut In Photogenic. Utah's Girl Scout Council Board of Directors has voted to w ithdraw from United Way, in the Great Salt Lake Area, Northern Utah, and .Cache Valley. Total United Way. allocations to Girl Scouts decreased from tl 14.327 in 1980 to 149.500 in 1985. Also contributing to the decision was the fact that Girl Scouts were not being funded on an equitable basis with other youth agencies. The Girl Scout Board has elected to seek support from the community at large through independent fund raising. While annual cookie sales provide the main sources of revenue to support girl scout programs, Girl Scouts will expand this market during the upcoming year. Allen Whats more, Herbalife belongs to the Direct Sales Association, and I sit on its executive committee. The DSA ensures that its members do not use an illegal marketing program. No pyramid. No endless chain scheme. Get to know Mark Hughes, in three sentences. Or, How to Completely Misread a Person. Youve read the medias quick character summaries of me: The handsome tanned, movie-sta- r pitch man with the Bel-Amansion... Or, the 29 year old e founder of Herbalife, a drug abuser whose education ended at the ninth grade. Each of those is painted with a broad-strok- e brush in black and white. Theyre really oversimplified. They imply that Im sick, that perhaps Im a flim-flaman, and that Im definitely too young and far too undereducated to run a $500 million company like Herbalife. What those descriptions - which are really caricatures and stereotyped prejudices - wont allow is that someone like me could rise to the top after going through some bad times, recovering and working hard. From my perspective there is no stronger indication of the integrity of Mark Hughes and Herbalife products than the vast numbers of grateful people I meet every day. These are people who credit Herbalife products for turning around their lives. And I hear from every kind of person - rich and poor, male and female, white, black, Hispanic, or Asian, from all over the country. The point is that these stories are pretty hard to dispute and that Herbalife people really cant be typecast. What were really talking about here is freedom of speech - the right to it and the obligation to be accurate and fair. The next time someone tempts you to play Telephone, consider the source and remember the obligation. ts ir one-tim- -- Reunion at Gooseberry The family of the late Earl A. and Myrl Mickelsen, met at the Old Gooseberry Ranch for a Family Reunion.
