The recommendation was made by graduate students Dale Lund and Michael Leming, who conducted a study of the relationship between age and the fear of death among 68 cancer patients. "Being made to feel useful and productive may help elderly patients to achieve a sense of dignity and acceptability in their the death, U researchers explained. Their findings, which evolved from interviews with 23 men and 45 women, were submitted to the Utah sociological Society at its first regular meeting held at Brigham Young University in Provo. All of the patients were diagnosed as having a serious form of cancer and were attending the Cancer Clinic at the University of Utah Hospital. Eighty-sipercent of them had less than a 50 percent chance of survival for the next five years, x according to a physicians evaluation. The study also noted that the younger patients expressed the hope they could be productive and able to pursue their valued goals. "It may prove useful, the U study said, "to counsel the younger patients by helping them to alter their goals and ambitions and to set new ones that can be accomplished. "Emphasizing and pointing out the things that they have already accomplished may also help to reduce some of their fears." The subjects were divided into five age groups and The mean age was 49.6 years. The study concluded that older patients had less fear of death and anxiety than the younger groups, but experienced higher levels of depression. Those in the age group had the lowest level of depression. As a total group, anxiety and fear are relatively high but more so for the voungest." older, we have had more time to either achieve our goals or at least rationalize why we did not." The buck only regulations over most of the State accounted for a 74 percent drop in antlerless deer taken, although some units with the either sex stipulation showed a continued high percentage of does taken during the hunt. In 1974, 8,351 does were legally harvested, compared to 32.587 in 1973. According to the spokesman, Utah's deer winter ranges are generally in better condition now than in years past and can .handle this planned addition of over 24,000 antlerless deer. If the unknown, illegal antlerless kill associated with the buck only season did not substantially decrease this number, their added reproductive potential should increase herd numbers over the next few years. The spokesman pointed out that hunter success last year dropped to just over 28 percent, but the high number of hunters afield coupled with restrictive hunts and reduced deer herds, must result in lower success. "Buck only hunts restrict sportsmen to go after about one third of the entire deer population," he explained. "We are confident most herds can be maintained at a higher level than at present. However, hunter success figures will not rise to those seen in the 'good old days because the number of hunters has doubled." GL-100- 0, Rides Free Honda & Man- 'OhA'Ch ager Al Boss pointed out that the majority of the deer herds in Southern Utah had an 11 day buck only hunt and, except for illegal kill, had no does removed during the hunt. This resulted in a 70 reduction for the Region 'in the doe kill compared with 1973. However, he also noted that several units located in the Salina. Fishlake, Teasdale, and Cedar City areas had a either sex hunt through the opening weekend and on these units the doe kill was relatively high. He noted further, that some of these same units had high antlerless kills in 1973 and indicated that Wildlife Resources game managers will be taking an especially close look to see what effects this doe removal has had on these units. Boss announced that the deer and range studies will begin in early April with the spring range rides and invited all interested persons to contact their local conservation officer for scheduling of these studies.
