Show . Advertising Is Crucial In view of what it costs to buy a "nickel candy bar these days, one should not be particularly surprised to learn that it also costs more to publish a newspaper. The Oregonian of Portland, Oregon has reluctantly reminded its readers of this fact in announcing a boost in the price of if s weekday edition from 10c to 15c. Since October of 1973, it is pointed out, the price of newsprint went from $168 to $245 a ton adding about $5 million to annual overhead for paper alone. In fact, there is a little over 12 cents worth of newsprint in the average daily edition of the Oregonian. Payrolls are running 40 percent above three years ago. The Oregonian happens to be a daily. But inflation in bie-cit- v similar lashion has hit hard at the thousands of smaller daily and weekly newspapers published across the United States. Under such circumstances, advertising revenue is doubly crucial to Americas free press. Advertising helps merchants sell goods and informs customers where they can find what they want. It also pays the cost of publishing a newspaper and keeps the single issue price down at a level the average person can well afford. Newspaper advertising, always vital in maintaining the independence and universality of the press, is in this time of trouble and inflation-ev- en more vital to the present and future of the nation's newspapers as the major strength of the written word in a free society.
