Do sou have any ideas? 1 Inflation Harried Farmer Dear Farmer, Would you believe sugar beets? All but one of our farmers have forsaken the sugar beet business, most of them several years ago. In fact, we have had the distinction the past two years of having in our County the only field of sugar beets south of Utah County. All that may change this year. Btvce Mtckelsen. Sugar Company fteldman, has Utah-ldah- tt iff been through our country beating the bushes for sugar && r; Cre"s have Pured footings "d placed steel bars in the cement, hith strengthen it as it is poured. This reversal in policy was brought on by the recent skyrocketing of sugar prices oil the heels of a threat by many beet producers to grow wheat or barley to take advantage of high grain prices. If you have had previous experience with beets and want to try them again, you might get in touch with Bryce. Grain crops are also possible cash crops that seem to promise a fair return this season. In any case, don't jump feet first into any crop you are not familiar with and expect to make a killing. You might be lucky, but history shows that experience and sound judgment will outdo luck in the farming business any day. Your best bets are crops you know how to grow that fit into vour needs and are compatible with the long term objectives of your overall management L. A. Young's cement truck rolled on its side Friday, as '.t waited near the hill on its way to the new water storage tank being constructed. The E & H Bonds Show Increase Sevier County Savings Bonds Charles R. Larsen. First State Bank of Salina, reported today that February bank sales of E and H Bonds throughout the State as reported by the Salt lake Branch, Federal Reserve Bank came to $1,722,324.75, which reflected an increase of over $42,000 for the same period last vear. n Undoubtedly, the chairman stated, the increase in interest rate on December 1. 1973 to six percent for both E and H Savings Bonds have greatly enhanced their appeal. E Bonds have had their maturity period shortened to five years with H Bonds tin 10 years (no change). Limitation for purchase has also been raised to $10,000. Further, he added, older E and H Bonds have also had their yields improved, so there would be no advantage in redeeming older Bonds. This, of course, would apply to outstanding Freedom Shares" (Savings Notes) also. What a snow job! Early man believed that storms were due to the wrath of a supernatural beast! Farm Income Up In 1973 Last year, the Nations farmers achieved record levels for cash receipts, gross and net farm income, and income per farm from farming. Furthermore, the total income of farm people, including their nonfarm earnings, reached a new high last year. Some of last year's records included cash receipts from marketings of $83.4 billion, realized gross of $90.5 billion, and realized net farm income of $26.1 billion, despite a huge increase in production expenses. This record net income was $6.4 billion above 1972. The excellent farm income situation experienced last year stemmed from a strong domestic and foreign demand coupled with - were introduced in 19o2 this was 28.6 percent above January 1973 figures. County Bond buyers were encouraged to take advantage of the increased interest rate by either participating in the Payroll Savings Plan offered by many Utah employers or the plan fiom their banks. available tight supplies ot many farm commodities. The per capita income of farm people from both farm and nonfarnt sources hit a new high in 1973. Their disposable income averaged $3,913 per person, up $731 from 1972. This record per capita income (after taxes) was about 93 percent of the average income received by nonfarnt people, a significant gain from a year earlier. Farmers are entering 1974 at record income levels. The farm income outlook for 1974 will be very sensitive to crop developments both here and abroad. Realized net farm income this year is likely to show a small drop, probably about $1 to $2 billion below the $26.1 billion in 1973. However, low output and high utilization of major field crops would result in sharply higher crop prices, and incomes to farmers well above the record realied net income of 1973. Conversely, a substantial increase in crop output from 1973 levels and reduced utilization would reduce crop prices and lead to considerably lower net farm income. BENNETT PAINT Q im-jooii- 4 .
