The final score was Cmcck 1 or delivery. F&G has to admit he wanted to pitch once. As a Little Leaguer he spent hours and hours throwing a baseball at a glove on his fathers hand. His spindly arms had the velocity to pitch but the accuracy was suspect. Finally after more time on the mound. F&G could control his pitches. There was a curve ball whizzer that that fell off a table, a side-aralmost came across sideways, and of course, fast ball that hummed. m Little League coach decided to give him a chance one day late in the season. The score was 0 for the good guys. F&G toed the rubber, took his warm ups. F&G 5-- The first batter up was a tough hitter. F&G threw. Strike one. He delivered again. Another strike. Then a swinging miss as the fastball hit the inside corner. Then things went bad. F&G, the shy youngster from the farm community, discovered people were watching him. He choked. He walked the next three batters and gave up a single. Relief came and retired the side. He was crushed and never asked to pitch again, though his fastball was still fast and his curve was curvey. Sometime later, about 10 years, F&G got another chance on the mound. This time in softball. had taken his wife to a new job in Nampa, Idaho where fastpitch softball is bigger than Peach Days in Brigham City. Kids hardly old enough to filch watermelons practice stealing He second. drafted to play on a church team, that unfortunately, had no pitcher. Most everything else was sound except at that spot. F&G said hed give it a try. He was 22-2- The first game of the season rolled around. small park with a ball diamond provided the setting. F&G took the mound. He couldnt hit the plate using a windup. He threw his away. He just cocked his arm back and brought it through. Not fast, but pretty accurate. The game began. It was like swinging at a slow knuckler after hitting against Nolan Ryans rockets. They couldnt believe a pitch could travel that slow and not arch. They popped up ; they grounded out ; they even struck out. F&G won his first game ever in the A wilds of Idaho. His subsequent trials, however, werent as productive. Fortunately, time has dimmed his memory. He wont have to go into those events. Now hes content to shag flies in right field and now and then try a new grip thats supposed to give a drop ball or a rise or an inside curve or reminder was issued this that freshmen who plan to play football at Box Elder High school this season should plan to attend a physical fitness program at the school Aug.
