The ratio is headed downward at ten Box Elder district schools next year, thanks to special funding for this purpose by the 1977 state legislature. An indication of where the money may be aonlied was outlined for the board of education by Supt. J. C. Haws at last weeks Wednesday evening meeting. Dr. Haws said its believed the district will receive about $73,000 to reduce pupil loads in the grades. However, this is not yet a firm figure and possibly wont be finalized until next spring. The superintendent said the $73,000 is approximately enough to pay for the services of eight additional teachers. As presented Wednesday, onfc additional teacher will be employed for the lower three grades at the following schools ratio in paren(projected thesis) : Bear River City (22.5:, Lincoln (24.6,) Fielding 22.0), Lake View (25.0, McKinley (25.3), North Park (22.7). Schools to receive a more time, Foothill (23.2), Garland (22.4;, Lincoln (24.0), and Mountain View (24.0). However, Dr. Haws said the telephone continues to ring and mail to come in during the holidays. Administrators are on the job during the period, he added. With this, the board voted to approve a proposed calendar. It contains 245 working days and stipulates that central office secretaries will be required to work two days during the Christmas holidays. The board agreed to table until June a requested state evaluation of the district central office. This will be financed from district funds and bring the ratio to 23.0. This will pretty well meet our needs, , he said. In other business, the board, after a discussion over whether central office secretaries should be required to work two days during Christmas holidays, voted to calendar for classified adopt a 1977-7personnel. with Board President L. The vote was Burke Larsen and Vice President Winston Benson dissenting. Larsen argued that scheduling work days was an administrative matter. Administrators with 245 working days required ought to have the flexibility to say which days are worked. The board was apparently ready to move in this direction, but Dr. Haws opposed. "I dont feel this is the way to go," he argued, adding that employes deserve to have a definite calendar. Benson indicated that he sympathized with the secretaries who didnt want to work the two days during Christmas time. He questioned that their services were really needed during that period. 8 2 the superintendent stated. Dr. Haws said he planned to take the proposal to the district advisory council Tuesday and if there are no objections, I assume it will be a part of our budget planning. He noted that only at Fielding school is there a problem of having enough classrooms to accommodate the added staffing.
