Show r t 6 Brigham City, Utah Thursday, April 14, 1977 BOX ELDER JOURNAL, will range close Jo public, Kiffle federation votes asking it discourage further development of the gun range, and to take action for its discontinuance. Johnsons letter came a short time after the federation announced plans for a $5,000 development with funds obtained from a state grant. These funds must now be turned back, Jensen said, since the range will not be open to the public. In his letter, Johnson charged the range as being a hazard and nusiance to my personal well being as well as to others at members night, federation acted on recommendation of president Wayne A. Jensen, who reported on a meeting a week ago with Mantua town representatives. Mantua board members told him at that time that the range had become a nusiance. It isnt the members who are causing the problems, Jensen told federation members Tuesday night, but the public who wont take care of the privilege they have to use the range. They bring litter up there and just let times, violating the original intent of the said range which was signed by both mutual parties. Johnson contended the agreement between the federation and his father said the range should be supervised at all times. Spoke Strongly And at last weeks town board meeting, board member Ralph Yearsley spoke out strongly it go. The range will be closed to all but members and guests effec- tive June the federation 1, voted. Enforce Closure The Box Elder sheriff will be directed to arrest all others but members who will display their current membership cards and other identification, it was decided. There are a lengthly debate about the matter, but after Jensen reported that Mantua town and a property owner adjacent to the federation range want the range removed, the members decided to take the action. Jensen said Leon Johnson, whose father sold the federation the property, had written a letter to the town board Feb. 7 against the range, charging many incidents of vandalism and misuse which were caused because the range was in the town limits. And at that meeting, Johnson acknowledged he is thinking of developing adjacent property into housing which would be incompatible with a gun range next door. Jensen noted Tuesday night that although the range appears destined to be moved from Mantua, by excluding the public the litter will no longer be a factor. He was doubtful, however, how the public will react to the closure, They may have more problems without a range there than before, he said. A Mantua resident, Blaine Jensen, a long time federation member and national delegate to the National Wildlife federation, told members he felt many of the allegations about the range were unfounded or that local towns people were responsible. I Dont Blame Range dont think you can blame any problems on the range. If the range werent there youd have plenty of trouble with vandalism that you dont have now, he said. Yi 723-34- BOX ELDER ACTION SPORTS'' Track and field is on the way back at Box Elder High school. Thats the promise of Mike Madeo, in his first year as head mentor of the spring sport. Thus far this spring, Hive thinclads have enjoyed moderate success. They defeated Ogden in a dual meet. They then finish in settled for a third-plac- e a tri meet with Weber and Roy and second in another three-wa- y affair with Davis and Range cleanup tonight Logan. The annual spring cleanup of the Box Elder Wildlife federation rifle range in Mantua will be held tonight (Thursday) starting at 5 p.m. Members are asked to bring shovels, rakes and pitchforks for this annual effort. Federation president Wayne A. Jensen said the cleanup should take about an hour and a half if enough members are on hand to help. Their next action is scheduled today (Thursday), a Region One contest involving Logan and Weber on the Warrior track. On paper it looks like we can win it and thats what were shooting for, Coach Madeo stated this week. He gives Bonneville top billing in the local league with Roy as next-bes- t. "And I think were right the two of them, added quickly. behind he Participate at WSC The Bees also plan to take in Wayne Jensen told members that the deed to the property carries no stipulations as to use of the range other than it must be open to federation members, and if it is discontinued as a range it will revert back to the previous owners or their heirs. I dont want to be responsible for what the public does at the range, Jensen said. Im just sick about the whole deal, but it doesnt make sense to put another $5,000 into the range if we know were going to get kicked out in a few years. The closure should eliminate almost all of the litter and trespass problems on adjacent property and allow the range to operate a few more years, he said. the annual Weber State College Invitational this Saturday in Ogden. Its an impressive meet. In fact it is a good barometer of who is going to do well at state, Madeo asserted. Right now Box Elder is pinning its highest hopes on the racing events. And with good reason. The top seven point producers so far are runners. Junior Clark Anderson leads the pack. Hes scored 38 points in meets to date. Sprinter Brian Oakeson is next with 35 points. Perhaps the king of the Box Elder hill this year, however, is Barney Olsen, a senior and three-yea- r letterman, who placed second in Region One and fifth at state in the dash last spring. He figures to move up this season, and has taken on the 880 as well. In addition, Olsen is a key member of the Bees mile relay team which Coach Madeo figures may be best in region and a top state contender.
