Friday night will pit the Christians versus the Christians in the Bee gymnaisum in the first game this season of the River basketBox Elder-Bea- r ball rivalry. Not a whole lot is riding on this game at first glance. Both and appear out of teams are the tournament picture. Whoa, there now. Lets look at that again. Bear River has at least one e game in store, meeting the Region Five sevenshould th place team in the Logan continue to dominate Region One. The 0 Grizzlies probably have too large a lead for the Bears to overcome at this point in the season. Hell be going with three juniors and a pair of seniors, including Clark Andersen and Brent Walker at guards. Dale Money and Kim Waddoups in the forward slots and Marlin Jensen at center. What the Bees need is a boost in scoring from other than Waddoups who is leading the league with more than 20 points per game. One encouraging note this week was the return of junior eager postman Bob Day. The has been sidelined with a broken ankle but was back working out this week. He could see action. Coach Stewart, a former Utah State standout and long-tim- e friend of Bear Mentor Paul 8 Jeppesen, another figures both clubs will be high for the game. Theyve each lost four but theres a lot of straight pride left on both sides. Neither team has quite, Stewart commented. Furthermore, he doesnt feel its too late to turn the season around. Turn Around Bear River win would add momentum toward a drive to turn a less than pleasant season around and push the Bears into the touranment. A Box Elder victory, however, would shed new hope for the Bees. Look at the way the region stands now. Discount the Grizzlies who are on top. That leaves Roy ) in the lead, Bonneville (3-in second and Sky View and Weber tied for third two games ahead of the Bees. Should Box Elder win, along side a loss by the Bobcats to Bonneville Friday night, then a game separates the teams. And Weber is at Roy, a probably loss for the Warriors. There are some key Region Nine matchups Friday night, pitting 0 and fourth ranked Lehi against 1 and fifth ranked Grantsville Morgan and 3 Wasatch. These battles are key for obvious reasons. The top three teams in the region at the end of the season head for the state tournament. With seven games left on the schedule, each gains more importance. A combination of wins by Morgan, Intermountain and Grantsville would bunch three clubs at 1 and the rest at and increase the difficulty factor of each game. Union has a win over Wasatch to its credit and could be extremely tough on its home court. 1 1 loss. Some Team Coach Paul Jeppesen will likely go with his same crew. Fishing that had been brisk over the weekend has ICE Ice anglers go after crappie at Willard Ice fising is cooling off a little at Willard bay. Warm blooded fishermen jigging through holes in the ice at the bay have been taking home some good catches of crappie, up until the past few days when the warm weather and sunshine seem to have put them on a different feeding pattern. Conservation officer John Fricke said the fishing was just short of great last week, with anglers hauling home literally buckets full of crappie. Most anglers were congregating around the north marina. Most popular lure has been a small white jig with some adding a piece of grub as an added attraction. Crappies up to nine inches have shown up along with a few adventerous bluegill. Fricke said the fishing waxes hot and cold with the movement of schools. Fishermen are boring through four to eight inches of ice to reach them where an occassional bass and walleye have also been jigged up, he added. He reminded anglers that a new license is needed, they can use only one pole and there is no limit on the number of crappie an angler can take. Women's hoop league slated womens basketball league has finally gotton off the ground in Brigham City. The ladies are expected to get underway Feb. 2 with entry deadline Jan. 25. Now, this ought to make all of us down at the race track feel better. Every week we all go to the races determined to win, even tho we know this is impossible, we have to feel this way. It is good to know what to err is human and we do manage to get enough wins to keep us hooked on the greatest winter sport ever. You didnt make a mistake if you were with us last Saturday, if you dont know one end of a horse from the other, you enjoyed the day spent in such a beautiful winter setting. The mountains, surrounding the valley, were etched in frosty white against a beautiful, blue sky and the sun was dazzling. It was heart warming to watch all the kids romping around, getting wet (hope you mothers didnt mind too much) and just having a ball. New System We tried out our new PA system and according to all the racing guys, it was heard all over. Lots better than trying to guess when you were supposed to hook up. I know of some people who were there for the first time, wanta bet it wont be the last? The races were so darn good, everyone just about ends in a dead heat. They are that close. Here is how last weeks races finished: Colts Ralph Yearsley over Don and Darrell Johnson; Bingham, Madsen and Golight-l- y over Cook and Cook; Bingham and Hinck over Nelson and Black; Wayne Garage, bye. Denny SnedAges horses don over Mclntire and Mann; Tom Johnson over Kenny Jensen ; Max By water over Dee and Grant Black. Now, that Max has to be some guy. He not only drove that team to victory but Friday night, late, he became the proud father of twin boys. Now this is something he didnt do all by himself, but Im sure his chest wasnt poking out all that much just for winning that race. Vickery and Mclntire over Sweeten and Neilsen; Robert Jeppesen over Dean Petersen; Waite and Jensen over Bill Roscoe; Allen and Murray over Darwin Bywater; Black and Nelson, bye; Gary Lynch over Fife Rock Products; Mick Spencer over Mike and Ken Burbank. To Nitty Gritty Boy, we are getting right to the nitty gritty, about three or four more races. If anyone is going to beat those Jeppesens they had sure better hurry. I thought Robert would be hoarse by now, the way he yells at those horses, but each week he turns up in good voice and wins again. Dont think we arent all trying to come up with the right combination to "tip" him. Congratulations, anyway, Robert. Now this is how the teams are paired for next week. We knew they were strong but we also looked bad. Stupid mistakes, penalties and wrestling cost us two matches. Excellent jobs were turned in by Kevin Nelson (128) and Jay Anderson (134), Coach Ron Wolff said after. Nelson recorded the Bees only pin while Anderson won his teams lone superior decision. Just think I just cant think of anything that gets them on such a strict time schedule as feeding and exercising their horses. Why, wives who never knew when the guys were coming for dinner can tell you exactly when they will start chores. Now we still dont know when they will be in for dinner, you never know who is going to stop by and horse gossip, and how long they will stay or they even get carried away, leave and dont come home for hours and somehow, dont tell me how, it's your fault if the are starving to death. But, I'm not complaining, its great fun and I do want you to share it with us. Bring all those kids, even a few of the neighbors and come let us help you keep them entertained and thrilled for hours.
