Show Beos place seventh 6 Brigham City, Utah December 23, 1976 Thursday, BOX ELDER JOURNAL, West dominates annual Richardson tournament A powerful Watt High wrestling team dominated the eight-teafield Saturday to win the fourth annual Richardson Memorial tournament at Box Elder High school. The Panthers rolled up 121 points to easily best second-bes- t Brighton with 113. In third place was school Pleasant Grove with 99 points, followed by Viewmont, 874; Hillcrest, 794; Nampa, Idaho, 79. Box Elder, 73, and Weber, 554. While the Bees were disappointed with their seventh-plac- e finish, the livers Jeff Hardy (145) was named the tourney's outstanding wrestler. Hardy defeated Mike Berger (V) with a pin in 2:00; Nathan Carroll (PG) in a 3 decision, and Jim Roska (W) with a pin in m 3-- A cx & 9-- 1:45. His opponents finished second, third and fourth to make SfM Hardys achievement all the more impressive. Larry Crowin (heavyweight) of Nampa recorded the most pins three. Salvaged Satisfaction Although the Bees finished BOX ELDER WRESTLER Mike Hatch receives instructions from Coach Ron Wolff, left, after consolation match at Richardson Memorial tournament ended in a tie, necessitating overtime action. . . . the coachly counsel must have done the trick. Hatch went out and in rather quick fashion put his foe on the mat and pinned him as this photo indicates. Hatch went on to capture fourth place in 1 ney was possibly the toughest mat this year outside the state tournament. 38-pou- get-togeth- er class. The tourin Utah low in the final standings. Coach Ron Wolff salvaged some satis- ' faction from the tourney. You can never be satisfied with a teams performance; in. fact, its dangerous to be happy over a performance. Even though we finished seventh (worst showing since Wolff has headed Bee wrestling), I feel we wrestled much better than at Brighton the previous weekend (when they placed third). coaches echoed the thought that they had just exA perienced the toughest tournament in the state of Utah. No one seemed disappointed in their overall performance. It was simply a fine show of high school wrestling. Our place winners looked good. Todd Williams loot the consolation finals 4 to the defending state champ. Mike Hatch lost 2 in thfconsination finals to a kid who beat him last weekend. Bruce Hubbard lost 94) in the finals and it marked the first time in four matches that Bruce was able to finish a match with George Dunn of , 3-- West. Were Proud We were extremely proud of the wrestling of Jeff Nelson who t.Wperboy. soiTgave uk good ptviwrtSaM while filling in for Mike Christensen and Kevin Nelson, Coach Wolff said. A spokesman said if a boy cant come 14) with the entry fee he should come and play anyway. Well make some arrangements for them. We dont' want anyone turned away because they cant come up with the fee, the spokesman said. Boys are encouarged to participate since all boys will play in games and there will be no adult pressure to win. Each boy will be allowed to play at his own skill level, the spokesman said. Box Elder now takes a rest from the mat chores, not swinging back into action until Jan. 4 when they'll entertain Ben Lomond in a practice meet. This has been a favorite of mine and it sure applies to the race track. It sure isnt hard to come up smiling when you have a win, but those losses arent the easiest to take. You know, It takes just as much work, feed and courage to lose as it does to win. Now, when I mention courage the drivers of those teams havf to know that it is pretty risky business to step into that chariot. When you think of the horse power that hurls that cart down the track Im surprised so msny guys love It. Maybe thats the answer. It is dangerous and b a challenge.
