I usually have a napkin or two scribbled with an item each, at least one envelope (I once had to call the bank and get them to read what Id written on my deposit slip) and a couple of paper sacks that have made major contributions to the news. Last year for Christmass my family bought me two notebooks and they both lie at home in unused splendor while I madly write on shopping lists, price tags, tops of boxes and sales slips. My choice of writing instruments is just as varied. They have included the ususal pens and pencils (sometimes sharpened on the spur of the moment with a pair of fingernail clippers), colored drawing pencils, childrens crayons and once a brown eyebrow pencil.
