Show 16 Brigham City, Utah Thursday, April 10, 1975 BOX ELDER JOURNAL, 'No one spray can do job during full growing season produced. High food costs have increased the interest in growing fruit in the home orchard. This article is directed to the small fruit producer who has but a few trees. Commercial fruit growers will usually use sprays that are not available to the small home orchardist. by Harold G. Lindsay USU extension agent It is often cheaper to buy worm-fre- e fruit than it is to produce it at home. Many home gardners grow fruit trees for pleasure and for whatever good fruit might be I am sorry to say there is no one spray that can be applied early in the spring that will prevent insect injury for the full growing season. Most fruit trees have insects that attack just that particular fruit and not another. Early in the spring it is usually necessary to apply a dormant spray to take care of mites, scale, mildew and aphids. In apples after bloom it is necessary to apply sprays for codling moth control. There are mite to control ripe you will find the slug eating away at the leaves and leaving just the veins of the leaf. These should be controlled. These are some but not all of the pests we find competing with us for the fruit the frost has missed. My suggestion is to obtain a spray guide for fruit trees and try to keep ahead of the insects. We will have information available in the extension office. One word of caution and that is to say there is a proper time to apply sprays to trees. If you spray the wrong time or use the wrong spray you might as well save your time and money. The insects will continue to do their damage and you will have poor quality fruit. during the summer in most trees. For apricots it is usually necessary to spray before bloom for coryneum blight. That is the condition which causes apricots to look like they have freckles. Some areas have problems with the twig borer in apricots and peaches. This problem requires a spray k stage. Many people have found the peach borer problem in both peaches and cherries. This is the condition where holes can be found in the trunk of the trees with large gobs of sap running from the holes. A spray during July and August will prevent this problem. at the pre-pin- About the time the cherries are OTHER SIZES CONCRETE 4" TO 24" PIPE. IRRIGATION and DRAINAGE. They should be fed again after they bloom to stimulate growth for the second bloom. Many rose growers are using one of the systemic insecticides worked in the soil to control aphids. In many cases, it is found that the canes have frozen down almost to the ground. People are asking the question, How should I Prune my Roses? "First, take out all dead and diseased wood. If the bush was frozen, it probably will be black. Prune back as far as necessary to reach live, healthy wood. Then remove all small twiggy branches and any that cross in the middle of the bush. Cut them off smoothly where they join the larger branch.
