Show Society Editoi BOX ELDER JOURNAL, Brigham City, Utah Thursday, August 17, 1972 s SCRATCH PAD In Box Elder County 5 It does not include money spent in restaurants and in other eating and drinking places. Mrs. Society Editor has to admit to not being very sports-mindealthough shed much rather watch the Olympics than be trapped in a room to watch a long game of chess between Boris 'n Bobby. However, the two male cubs of the family are sportsminded when it comes to playing although they dont care for televised games or watch scores of any major teams. That may come later, but right now the actual participation is what counts for them. The summer began with Little League baseball, and Youngest Brother was the most faithful fan of the season and didn't miss a game or many of the practices despite the fact that he was only eight and couldnt play on a team. Food, Cars Rank High in Spending Enjoyed Play Young Son, on the other hand, played and despite being small and getting a different colored uniform and being left off the coach's initial list he went through the season and didnt even lament too much when his team came in on the bottom, although he'd been happier to be on the championship team the previous year. Summer continued with a week at church camp and a week at Grandmas and other activities opting out swimming classes since each three-weeperiod hit one of the scheduled weeks, but they made up for it by lots of afternoon swimming and then being grounded until the sunburn peeled and could be started over. By the end of the summer, theyve both built up enough tan that an afternoon at the pool just gives a slightly pink tinge. Birthday Set for How much are Box Elder county families spending per year? Where are they spending it and for what? According to figures just released, consumer outlays in for food, local retail stores clothing, furniture, cars and were at a other commodities higher level during the past year than had been expected. Most local families, enjoying bigger incomes than in other years, were in a position to spend more freely and they did so, but somewhat cautiously. With the war still going on and with inflation and unemployment disturbing factors in the national economy, they chose to limit their expenditures, putting the excess into savings. All in all, however, local merchants had a good year, compared with 1970. The facts and figures, showing how the consumer dollar was distributed locally, are contained in a new market study made by the Standard Rate and Data service. Both boys must really want to play, for they stood in line from 5:30 to 11:30 p.m. Tuesday night for physicals and still are ready to play. (It does seem that numbers could be given as the children line up so that some can go home and have supper before 11:30 p.m. and so that the little fellows dont continually get shoved out of line, however.) The Editor boys are both in the under-7- 0 pounds class and ended up at the last of the line by 11:30 p.m. and there had been about 30 boys behind then when they first lined up! comparable data for every section of the country. In Box Elder county, it shows, a large part of the dollar went to food and stores selling ll Coaches Great But one cant complain too loudly about missed vacations, late suppers, Saturdays spent driving all over, and laundering without considering uniforms the hundreds of hours that the organizers and coaches put in with the boys as they try to build skills, sportsmanship, and leadership in the sports programs. They deserve real thanks from the parents involved. Say, what would happen If a girl tried to get on a team...has womens lib hit the Little League football program yet? Ind. Dr. Edward Henry, (UPD new president of Saint Mary's College here, says the role and nature of womens colleges is changing and will continue to change. Theyre no longer exclusively womens cam- puses, for one. Rather they recognize that women in the formative period of their lives should be able to control the major thrust of their own education and aim it at the particular needs they have in developing a sense of their own sexual identity and outlook....
