It was an interesting and stimul(R-Uta- h) er ating experience. Like hashing things over with the neighbor across the back yard fence. This was the time to air ones peeves about whats happening in Washington, to gain a clarification of issues and to probe for additional insight on developments in the na- tions capital. We felt rewarded for our attendance and suspect others did as well. There just werent enough of us. Only about 16 citizens were on hand. chamber of luncheon with the senator later. But that was a different kind of The earlier community center session was less formal. It wasnt necessary to make reservations. Or get dressed up. Nor did it cost anything. Too bad more folks didnt pause long enough from their garden work or house keeping, or whatever, and spend an hour with the senator. Were not scolding, just saying it was an opportunity missed by a lot of people. Next time a similar chance comes your way, take advantage of it. More on the luncheon. Some 74 persons were there. And what they MORE ATTENDED a commerce-sponsore- d get-togeth- heard was a conservative senator who has a reputation for expressing himself graphically and to the point. On a couple of occasions weve taken him to task in these columns for the manner in which he has voiced his opinion. But we seldom disagree with Imposition. He did not disappoint those who expected some outspoken observations Thursday. For example, asked about federal funding to finance the International Womens Year conferences, he called it a ripoff of the taxpayers with the conferences intended specifically to promote the Equal Rights amendment. AND THEN HE INFORMED lis- teners, concerning some of the feminists leaders who testified at hearings, you wondered if they didnt shave that morning before they came. They were some of the most unfeminine women Ive, so-call- ed seen in my life. We wouldnt say this was exactly wooing the womens lib vote. Another observation by Senator Garn: Most people cheer when he votes to curb spending and reduce the budget. But they get mad as the dickens if that vote cuts into their area of special interest. Trying to please everyone while stemming the increasing flow of money from Washington, then, is and not like going for a swim getting wet. Kinda tough to do. f v V .' Letters to the Editor ... But no more. The brainy spheres of interest have taken a more respected place in the school community. The landfill is the place for waste matter, not our city streets. . - On Tuesday, July 19, 1 received a phone call from David Lee, who works for Congressman Gunn McKay, in response to my letter concerning the IWY conference. Congressman McKay is against abortion, homosexuality, and anything that would break down the family. He likes to see women get together and express their views, but with their own funds and not federal money. Congressman McKay is an active member of the LDS church and continually practices their beliefs. In 1972, 1 along with the rest of the Utah delegation to the National Citizenship Short course, met with him. He took the time to show us around and explain what he does, and how Congress functions. On Tuesday, July 26, 1 received a letter from Congressman McKay. I was given permission to print, it. It is common practice to tack on something totally irrelevant to the rest of the good resolution just so it will pass. Such was the case with IWY. Here is his letter: On Dec. 10, 1975, the House of Representatives considered H.R. 9924, which called for the organization of a National Womens conference. I voted against the bill which authorized $10 million to fund the various state and national conferences. On April 13, 1976, the appropriations bill (H.R, 13172), which provides money to operate the federal government, included $5 million for these womens conferences-'- ! voted for an amendment to delete this money from the bill. The amendment failed, however, by voice vote. ' I voted in favor of the final appropriations bill because to do otherwise would deny funds to numerous other worthwhile federal programs such as defense spending, child nutrition and special milk programs, emergency flood prevention, agricultural research and meat and poultry inspection. I do not believe it is the responsibility of the government to spend taxpayers money promoting conferences of this nature. 4--H society or just call the whole thing off? I asked him. well.
