Show NEWS, Brigham City, Utah Sunday, September 28, 1975 BOX ELDER 'Fortunate to win says Laker boss Frustration dogs Bees in loss to Bonneville When they write that great book about charity, Box Elder deserves a couple of chapters. One devoted to heartbreak. Another to frustration. They earned the right Friday afternoon at Bonneville where the Lakers came from behind in the final seconds to claim a 2 Region One football victory. Bonneville Coach Tom Budge said it best in the aftermath of that gridiron saga: We feel fortunate to win. They just kicked our fannies out there today. But it doesnt matter that Box 14-1- J Elder dominated the game throughout the second half. Theres little consolation in the fact that Coach Gordon Petersons bunch spent so much time d line inside the Laker they should have bfer homesteading rights. That final score is there for posterity to read generations hence. five-yar- the difference. Midway through the second period they marched to the 5 with a first and goal but couldnt push it over. Minutes later they moved to the 8 with first and goal, goofed up a pitch play but still got it back to the line with one more down to push across. And then got socked markoff for unwith a sportsmanlike conduct (for which the Hive coaching staff got credit). Poof went that opportunity. And then in the third period they rolled over Bonneville to line with first and the goal. And lost the ball on a fumble. Somehow in the fourth period, they managed to squeeze in a couple of touchdowns just when it seemed the fates wouldnt allow it. On this pigskin occasion it appeared at last the real Box Elder football had stood up, not the imposter which posted a mark going into the outing in unimpressive fashion. But in the fuTal analysis, it was Box Elder mistakes that spelled Hit Hard They hit hard on defense. They were aggressive. Let Coach Budge tell it: They were a good physical squad. That Hall is just a fine but then running back youve got to give credit to the offensive line. They opened the holes. They handled us." Nevertheless, it was Bonneville who hit the scoreboard first. Starting on their own 21, the Lakers gobbled up yardage in a hurry. They were aided and k abetted by penalties on the Bees for pass interference and roughing the passer. It was journeyman halfback Kirt Nelson who got the TD on fourth down from the BE-2- , jusi one play into the second quarter. The PAT kick was wide and that capped first-hal- f scoring. Bonneville reciprocated with some boo-boof their own early in the third period. They took the kickoff, proc-ede- d to chew up yardage like a cow eats hay. But two penalties for clipping, then holding, not only stalled their TD train but nullified a pass play, Jeff Blackburn to Kurt Boyer. ... back-to-bac- Took Over Thats when the Cats claw Bears in 35-- 6 Sky View broke open a tight first half with three touchdowns in the second to race away from the Bear River Bears 35-- in the Bobcat homecoming. The Bears smacked the Bobcats around for most of two quarters and only when aided by penalities were the hosts able to score in the first period. That when Tim Kohler slipped and slid out of the hands of several Bears to run 32 yards. The kick was good for 0 Bobcat lead. The Bear running and passing attack took hold early and with Brad Cutler throwing to Blair Anderson and Richard Brown and with David Falk and Cutler doing some running, picked up yardage. 6 Fumble a fumble thwarted a drive and two dropped passes nullified another. The Bear River defense really didnt have that much problem with the Sky View off tackle plays at first and when Tad Morrison fumbled after catch- - v ing a pass on the BR 30, threw the Cats for seven yards in losses. The big play of the half for the Bears came on the Bobcats 37 when Mike Roundy batted a pass at his middle linebacker spot, snagged it and ran 37 yards for the touchdown. The pass for the two points failed and the Bears trailed Then a crucial play just before half developed, which seemed to break the Bear backs. Once TD Pass Jim Chambers got behind Rick Jones and snagged an Alan Maughan pass for the touch- - test fourth-and-on- down to give the Bobcats at half. vantage, The Bears made a last gasp, Cutler to Jones down to the SV 25 as the gun sounded. But after half time, the Bobcats came out fired up and the Bears down. Bear Rivers defense did stop the Bobcats on downs on their own 10, but an interception nullified that fine effort and Todd Williams bulled in with 5:30 to play in the third. Kohler scored again at the end of the third on a run, again slipping out of the arms of Bear Tacklers several times. The last touchdown by Wiliams was so much icing and left the Bears looking for next weeks showdown with the Bees. The game is slated for 7:30 p.m. in Garland. The Bears had some individual performances. While the Bear passing wasnt potent, it cant be faulted, for the Sky View defense covered receivers like a surgeons mask. I was greatly encouraged by the way we played. The kids deserved to win. The stats reflected the same kind of story. Box Elder rushed for 289 yards and added 72 passing for 361 total yards. Bonneville was limited to 119 ground yards and 75 more in the air for 194 total. Hall more than met that measure. He rushed for 225 yards on 36 carries, a 6.3 average clip. Hansen was credited with 35 yards rushing and got 60 more on pass receptions for a fine afternoon. Seven plays later he found Boyer on a toss up the middle and the little guy everybody into the end zone from 16 yards out. The Lakers sealed the coffin lid shut when Nelson took a pitch and went left for a ence call on the Bees. Coach Budge said on that deciding drive we just wanted to keep throwing under their zone coverage and hope to get yardage after the catch. It worked. For the Lakers, it gave them a mark in league standings and represented a nice gift for homecoming.
