Employing water recycling techniques, and modern fish raising equipment, the Mantua hatchery owned by the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources is nearing completion. The $729,500 facility built with the aid of federal funds, is destined for use as part of a pioject to improve cutthroat populations at Bear long-rang- e Lake. Ron Roubidioux, hatchery manager, is anxiously awaiting completion of the unit which still must include construction of raceways to raise the fry to six-inc- h fish. Complex Maze The new facility is a complex maze of pumps, pipe and electrical hardware necessary to keep the hatchery operating at optimum levels. Roubidioux said the hatchery will obtain water from two springs behind the plant, just as it was for the old hatchery. There the similarity almost stops. The water goes into a series of tanks and holding areas for aeration, heating and eventual circulation into the fish raising tanks of which there will be 32 in the initial phase. The hatchery was built with the conservation of water in mind and only about 10 percent of the water running through the system will be new water, the lemainder making more trips after purification and aeration, he said. Auxiliary Power Since the hatchery depends greatly on electricity for its operation, the facility must have auxiliary power, but a generator and panel hardware will not be available for another several weeks. Roubidioux said he hopes, in the meantime, the remainder of the facilities, the raceways and a new residence, can be let for bid and construction started to allow operation of the unit next spring. The fishieries expert said one reason for the complexity is to outside view of the $729,500 Mantua hatchery. The hatchery also has the ability to heat water to expedite egg hatching, he said The hatchery will have the capacity to raise some 42,000 fish a year. pounds of con- Many Eggs Some three and a half million eggs can be hatched and raised, said Roubidioux Most tish from the hatchery will be planted at six inches The sole purpose of the hatchery is to make Bear lake the eutthioat water it once was, the officer said. That means virtually all fish taised m Mantua will make their way to the lake. The division has been taking spawn from fish caught in traps the past two years from two streams entering the lake, but all those eggs have been shipped to a hatchery down south for raising. About 300,000 planters were put into the lake last year, he noted. When the hatchery is completed, all the eggs taken will come to Mantua to be raised. Utah is cooperating with the Idaho Fish and Game department which is aiding in taking the spawn Forage Fish Roubidioux says it appears the lake's chemical make up won t for minute allow oiganisms to multiply in the numbers necessary to raise fish from fry, but there are plenty of forage fish available for larger fish, hence stocking of six inch-plu- s fingerlings. hatchery ,'bui'lding,t' where styrofoam balls will remove the The five and diameter fry tanks will keep fish only to about an inch and a half in length, then they must be transferred to the raceways, in which there will be 30 ponds.
