Manet, every inch the rebel, insisted on painting things as he saw them instead of how they actually were and the whole idea was looked upon as sacrilege by his peers. Each new work was accompanied by the anguished howls of an offended army of critics and accompanied by the anguished howls of an offended army of critics and occasionally they were vocal enough to affect Manet. In 1864 he presented a painting called, Incident in the Bull Ring which was immediately attacked on the grounds that the perspective was hideously wrong, Manet apparently agreed and cut the composition up into several pieces, one of which became known as, The Dead Toreador. From the painting of The Dead Toreador Manet made an etching which he gave the same title. Though the etching is in black and white and thus lacks the somber colors which made the painting so impressive, Manet used this to its full advantage. Through the black and white starkeness of the figure he imparts to us the cold realtiy of death and we realize immediately that this toreador will never again doff his cap to the applause of an admiring crowd. Manet, however, would not only have us see what he saw but also feel what he felt; and as we gaze at the heavy blackness weighing down upon the figure we slowly sense that this toreador's death was not blessed relief but was instead a true and untimely tragedy. Edouard Manets philosophy of art later became known as Impressionism and "The Dead Toreador is just that, a convincing impression of a tragic death. tour offered BC tour of Brigham made available luring Artrain Week, April 23- A d ity is being High school choral room.
