VaLoie Hillman lost her life in a tragic airplane accident in the summer of 1946. Bob Hillman has since remarried, and his wife, Elma Hillman, now is a member of the firm. In addition to the four proprietors, the Pheasant cafe employs a staff of eight, with extra help during rush seasons, such as Peach Days. It opens at 6 oclock each morning and is open until 1 oclock in the morning, every day excepting Sundays. Specialties are thick, juicy steaks and French fried shrimp but the Pheasant cooks take pride in every meal they serve, and pay strict attention to the small details that made dining a pleasure. All of their pastries are made in their own kitchens, and are praised highly by their customers. When the war was over and their husbands came home, the Hillmans and Bradburys decided to expand the business. They leased the building formerly occupied by the Grill cafe, just across the street from the Quick lunch, and opened the large cafe under the name of The Pheasant, with Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Bradbury and Mr. and Mrs. Bob Hillman as proprietors. Westindiouse DOES MOkE FOR THE MONEY tabernacle, with its majestic minarets standing guard to the 220 foot tower. The location of this classic building is attributed to President Brigham Young in whose honor Brigham- City was named. The first impression of the early settlers was to build toward the lower, more moist lowlands, and toward the north. President Young impressed the community with the thought that the present side of the tabernacle would become the center of the city, and that crowning this location was the place to build a House of God. Today moire than ever the wisdom of his choice can be seen. Wisdom and spiritual culture brought the people of Brigham City to this section. The desire to serve their God in freedom to build communities where the highest virtues of Christian i faith might be lived and e(j jhe world as the founda- tion of a new brotherhood. A beacon light that should shine forth to all the world and help lead all men to the higher life. In this thought can be read the purpose in giving the most prominent position to a temple - offer-dinner- of God. to read back It is Friday over theinterestingand know the years sacrifices made to build this beautiful structure. There were days of toil hard work that would sound unbelievable to many today. In that time it meant .unselfishness of the highest type. Every Stone, hod of mortar, floor joise, spire or fixture is touched with the most holy of all motives. The words of the poet: In the elder days of art. Builders wrought with greatest care Each minute and unseen part, For the gods see everywhere. are literally true in this building. The pride of the workmen in their task is evidenced in every nook and part of the tabernacle. The architecture of the buildings; the workmanship, both inside and outside, came from a past period and should be cherished b ythe people ' of this city. Just before President Lorenzo Snow, who stands as the Brigham Young of this community, was relieved of the responsibility of the stake presidency, the tabernacle was begun in 1876. Its completion was under the direction of his son, President Oliver G. Snow in 1881. At that time the pulpit was in the East end of the building. All this was changed in 1892 when a fire razed the building, all except the walls. It happened that the writer of this article, with a companion, first discovered the fire. If he and his friend could have convinced others that the building was on fire, the costly silver sacrament set could have been saved. Many a tear was shed as the great clouds of smoke spoke the doom of the past grandeur of the building. With renewed faith and courage the people soon rallied and from the ashes of the past sprang into being a more beautiful building than before. The original building most some $6,000 but in addition a great deal of free labor. The rebuilding of the building after the fire cost some $15,000. In 1920 seven thousand dollars was spent on improvements. The Box Elder stake tabernacle stands today as the most treasured gem of the past, a reminder to us all that greater than our silver or gold, or our orchids and cattle on a thousand hills, Ls our heritage of the spirit of the pioneers who gave to us this choice land for our home. ...
