FOR several weeks, the overcrowding condition at the Farmington jail has been so critical that jail ceils have Ms been overcrowded, inmates have been forced to sleep on mats on the floor, and at times county inmates have been jailed in facilities outside the county. J ust like there was no room for Jesus at the inn, there has been no room for inmates at this jail for a long time, said one jail spokesman. THE JAIL was built for 38 beds. Earlier this month, the jail population rose above 60. work-releas- e Some prisoners who serve time at the jail at nights and on weekends were sent home because there was no room to house them in the jail, it was explained. THE situation at the jail has been a major issue during the time, house a few inmates in a Cache County jail. Commission. The overcrowding at the jail has been a problem at various times for several years. But the most critical period came a couple of weeks ago when the jail population rose to 66 nearly twice what the jail was designed for and Sheriff Lawrence and Commissioner Wendell Zaugg were forced to go out in the night and find mattresses for inmates to sleep on. several months ago a $3.5 past year between Sheriff Lawrence and the County Sheriff Lawrence proposed million public safety complex, including a new and larger jail, to be built north of Farmington. Then the County Commission agreed to raise funds for an addition to the present jail facility by increasing the county property tax two milU for two years to fund the project. THE COUNTY attempted to house prisoners in jails in other counties, but those jails, too, were filled to capacity or the cost was nearly prohibitive.
