Show t rvn 18ll&ilTlfl This weeks Clearfield and Viewmont battle Is a game that some of the Clearfield players have been looking forward to for about a year now. It seems that last year as a junior varsity club the Falcons didnt lose too many games, but two of their loses came to the Vikes. Revenge is definitely their minds this week wn the two collide. at If you go on last weeks scores alone then the Clearfield club would have to be considered heavy favorites. But somehow the Vikes dont look or play like underdogs. Actually these two clubs match up, size wise at least, almost evenly. sons while the Vikes have John Higley and Kevin Hess. Both clubs have good size, although no real giants on either side, up front. Clearfield goes with Brian Johnson, Scott Wallace and Russell Florence, while Viewmont will counter with Cory Hanks, Mike Yates and Cal Curtis. observers will say that the Clearfield team will walk away with this contest, but then you have to consider that the Vike team won twice last year. MANY One difference between this By DAVE WiGHAM I SHE has competed in volleyball, tennis, basketball and track for the Falcons. Could she play others? According to the girls swimming coach Sid Connely, Sure she would have been a great addition to the squad. Jackie says she would have liked to have been on the swim team but she was already involved with the volleyball and tennis teams so didnt want to try to handle three sports at one time. Time is probably the only restriction that this lady has, she has all the talent and desire needed to be a great athlete. THE obvious question to an athlete of her caliber is which sport she likes the best? "Everyone asks me that and I can honestly say I like them all the best. Although all you do in track Is run. One gets the impression that Jackie likes to do more than Just run. Although she really doesnt know what sport she is best at, she admitted that the colleges are talking to her mainly for basketball, with one interested in her volleyball ability. Jackie has a sister playing in the girls program at Weber State. SHE would like to go to college but really doesnt know who will offer her what just yet, T understand that they are going to have a meeting in January to decide Just what the girls athletic department can offer an incoming athlete. Until then Ill just do my best and see what they offer. One thing for sure whatever they can offer, Jackie will get. The Beenes moved to Clearfield when Jackie was in the seventh grade, which she claims Is when she took up athletics. She didn't play basketball until the ninth grade. It's kinda funny in a defensive ball game. 61, 3. Viewmonts John Higley and Clearfields Darren Parry. Higley is the taller, hes about 61 compared to Parrys TV but Parry has the experience having played a lot last season while Higley was strictly a JV player. Higley has been known to drive and with his height advantage he could go inside a lot this Thursday. BOTH clubs are well established as powers in the area, and they both like the team play concept Clearfield will have to take the middle away from Viking Cory Hanks, who had a good day last week, and the driving lanes away VIEWMONT will also have a little height advantage up front, due to the fact that , playing golf. Many observers say that Jackies best sport is the one Just around the corner, the one with the roundball. Jackie says she really improved her game by attending three camps, a couple in Utah and one at the University of She emphasized the quality at the Washington ' camp. , ILqI Mqug Teams By DAVE WIGHAM r UP IN the Brighton classic Three schools from Davis County sent their wrestling squads to the Orem Invitational this past weekend while a fourth team participated In and then Viewmont 97. In the Orem tournament Davis County walked away with four individual champions as Bountiful and Layton both saw two of their wrestlers win their weight class. Wade George and Dean Layton both won top honors for the Braves while Wayne Klttrell and Bill Dugmore won for the Lancers. the Brighton Invitational. BOUNTIFUL did the best of all the schools placing second in the Orem meet. Layton placed fourth in the same meet while the young Woods Cross team placed sixth in the meet. Meanwhile up at Brighton High In Salt Lake City, the Viewmont grapplers were taking fourth plaice honors. Both tournaments were eight team affairs with some of the top clubs from the state entered in both events. The team winner at the Orem classic was powerhouse Delta, who are known for their wrestling programs. The Rabbits scored 151 points, Bountiful 111, Orem 106 and Layton 90. TOP finishers and point-gettefor their schools were as follows: In the class. Bountifuls Rod Merrill placed third beating Lance Olsen of Layton In the final match, Lance took fourth. JACKIE and Denise Russell are the only two starters returning off of last years state championship team but Jackie still feels this years club has a good shot at defending that crown. Among her accomplish- ' r u ments in sports, besides ing on the state championship basketball team, are a first place finish in the 100 yard dash and a sixth place finish In the state 440 yard dash. SHE still has a little to say about the 220 yard dash last year. She had just run the 220 and they told her to report to the starting line for the 440, she was tired and failed to qualify for the finals. She was the region champion in the 440 so she was one of the favorites. Jackie has gained a lot of FIVE Clearfield players scored in the double figures for Coach Reid, who likes to see the entire team do well. In the go round the Falcons have become famous for their fourth quarter spurts and this one was no exception as they put 21 points on the board in the final period to nail the coffin lid on the Lakers. Brian Johnson and Kelly Parsons put 15 points on the Clearfield ledger while Russell Florence added 14 For the Bonneville club Stagg poured in 21 points. pre-seas- TRUE, I agree with the writer that an athletic trainer a team doctor that the coaches use frequently. If there is anyone that thinks the coaches In the area g arent thinking and concerned with the athletes first, then those people are very wrong. Every coach is worried about his players. If a player is hurt, then he shouldnt play and the coaches. If they know about it, dont play that person. How many times do the athletes actually tell the coach if they are hurt? Many occasions I have known the players to remain quiet, this is no fault of the would be great, but all the high schools I know have respect from the male athletes at the school. With all that talent its ob- -' vious shes an athlete, and just to look at her one knows she is an attractive woman, so to me the title is well earned. ROY outscored Layton Giblems THE POINT about not being trained to perform In athletic training Is not really true. If you major In physical education youd be surprised at the type of classes required. True, these classes wouldn't get you into medical school but majors are required in such classes as Kinesiology, tests and measurements, first aid, human anatomy. Give the coaches some credit, they are not stupid when it comes to the human body. Certainly not as qualified as a doctor, but certainly more than John Doe. Look on the other hand, I have known athletes who have gone to specialists and still had problems with rehabilitation of a knee injury. THE biggest surprise of the night probably was the Weber win over Viewmont on the Vike floor. Viewmont has looked but impressive In they were ambushed by the Warriors. The Vikes got balanced scoring from their front line THE IDEA of a trainer Is good. To me the coach Is well qualified In that field. And with the addition of working with the team doctor, I maintain that the athletes are well taken care of In the high schools in the area. Believe me, the coaches first care is for the welfare and health of his players. pre-seas- .but they couldnt control Webers great shooting guard Steve Trawlck who finished the night with 22 tallies. Coach Petersen indicated he was very pleased with the way he wrestled. John Luddington then picked up some more points for the Braves with bis third place finish in the 145class. Bountifuls Wade George and Dave Egan of Woods Cross locked horps In the finals on Wade appeared the to have the match won In regulation time but Egan put on a move with about ten seconds to go to score four quick points and send it into overtime. THE thing that really bugs him about last year is that the eventually state champion in the 98 pound class he had already beaten twice in previous matches. When asked if he thought he could have won the title at 105 he pointed out that it would have been tough. CLEARFIELD, Weber and Sky View all walked away with road victories while Roy used its home court as those four were the first round winners as Region One basketball opened last Friday. The Clearfield win was the most lopsided of the four games as the Falcons sounded a warning to the other teams that they are the team to beat in this league. FIRST OF all Jet me assure all people concerned that none of the athletes mentioned were injured a result of poor medical Judgment by a coach. The boy who is having trouble with his knee is under a doctors supervision, so a trainer wouldnt be able to do much anyway. Another football injury, to the player at Davis, came during football and he was treated by a doctor and slowly working his way back Into condition tor basketball. The athlete at Viewmont who suffered the injury in the summer is a special case. First of all, a coach or a doctor, has no way of telling what an injury is if the athlete makes no comment concerning being hurt In this case the athlete thought It less serious than it obviously was. In football the athlete felt the pain, said nothing, thinking it just part of being hit all the time.
