Show WEEKLY REFLEX DAVIS NEWS JOURNAL. DECEMBER 22. 1977 ' in,n w',f'W?- r ' 'r yao ass sfcsj ; wawy tw : X Layton Elementary School students presented a Christmas Cantata for their parents this week which included a variety of Y ule songs chorus and special numbers by Barby Poulsen, by the Suzanne Murdock, Elet Neilson, Todd Boothe, Gordon Murdock, Cindy and Suzv Flint, Tommy and Daren Lewis; and brothers Darrell, David, Douglas and Sterling Bums. Pictured in the chorus are front row 1 to r: Jesse Hernandez, Lisa Adams and Debbie Ipaktchian; second row, Aaron Flint, Mike Day, David Bums and Heidi Hansen; and third row, Tammy Sharp, Carol Day and John Burdett. CANTATA i By DAVE WIGHAM In a certain way the Bountiful basketball team jumps out of the pan and into the fire as the Braves travel up north to take on the Weber High ' squad. GAME TIME is Thursday, 7:30 p.m. in the Warriors gym. Last week the Sky View guards gave the Bountiful people some problems and this week the situation isnt much better with the Weber In there with du back-cou- rt View-mo- nt ir?t Friday, which the Weber team won, guard Steve Trawick pumped in 21 points, and was just generally con-- i sidered a thorn in the Vikings side all night. Bountiful will have to come up with a way to stop this smooth-shootin- g senior. CHRIS DAVIES displayed some excellent quickness last week for the Braves but he got into foul troubles and spent a lot of the night sitting next to the coach on the bench. If Chris can keep away from the cheap fouls and out of trouble then he could very well handle Trawick. Offensively Chris needs to stay in the game and run the offense, he is a good shooter and the Braves need him in the lineup. Bountifuls other guard, John Hazen, had been a shooting tear going into league play, but last week for some reason te his shooting slacked off and he didnt have a good night at all. John will need a good night for the Braves in order for them to win this one. BIGGEST problem for the Weber people will obviously be trying to stop Bountifuls big man, Irvy Williams. Irv has turned into one of the best centers around. He can even go at forward if needs be. He has excellent quickness and movement and can also shoot from the outside. When he gets the ball he makes things hap-- . pen, but in past contests, especially the ones they have' lost, the Bountiful people have had problems getting the ball into the big man. Once he gets it, people stuff off on him and he gets it to the open man for a good shot. If. people dont slag off of him and only one man tries to handle him, then Irv puts on a move and goes right to the bucket. The Warriors have a tall ' center, 66 Brad Hall, but he Umw$ been somewhat unproductive in the scoring column. Brian Slagowski has been holding down that position but Brave coach, John Robison, has indicated that Scott Crowther will get the starting call in an effort to get more points from the forward spot. Slag will see action and will need to shoot more when he is in, but Crowtber will get the start. While Layton was dropping games to the likes of East and West, the Bonneville club was beating Ogden. They had a hard time downing Woods Cross, which by the way is a very good club. The point is anyone can have an impressive preseason if they want to schedule one. The Lancers had a much rougher schedule to play. The main question at Lay-to- n this past week is what happened to the guardline last week. Going into the season one of the Lancer strong points was supposed to be their guards, yet last week the bulk of the scoring came from up front with Rory Dixon and Brandon Flint getting scoring honors. Ben Bubak added 11 points to the cause but they need more scoring from the backcourt. In their loss last week the Lancers seemed to fall asleep in the third period as they only managed to put ten points up on the board. THE LANCERS have some great talent in their corner, Dixon and Flint are as good forwards as you'll find. Flint LAST YEAR the United Way was responsible for raising $83,642 The total amount contributed by employees and employers in Davis County was more than $275,451. It is expected that this years contributions in Davis County will exceed $300,000. It is expected that a final report will be provided early in January giving the highlights of the campaign effort. This is a great way to approach the holiday season by knowing that we have achieved a goal that has In- - ' power-typ- e player that likes to mix it up, while Dixon will surprise many folks with his jumping ability. Both offer their own thing in the club and both are vital to their success. The guardline is one of the best with Bubak, Carl Woodward and Rick Snow all seeing action. Woodward is a great outside shooter who came into his own last year when clubs sagged in the middle. Bubak and Snow are quick and like to penetrate, so the Layton clubs offer a little bit of everything from the guardline. The Lakers will have a tough decision to make. If they play a zone the guards will pop from the outside, and if they go man then the Lancers go inside. Game time is 7:30 p.m. in Lancerville. THE MAIN difference in last weeks losses were the Bonneville team dropped a game at home while the Lancers were on the road. In this league a loss at home is twice as bad as one on the road. Youre supposed to lose on foreign ground in this balanced league, but youre also supposed to win on the home floor to stay alive. Another difference was the way in which they lost. True a win is a win and a loss is a loss. Layton was in the game most of the time before bowing to Roy, while the Bonneville was team dominated by Clearfield, the Lakers were never really in the game. helps to cita-UlllUC- KaysviDfle PiicEiup Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
